Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Verizon Future

Considering 93% of households have FCC Broadband and 98% of USA citizens 18+ have a cellphone in USA.... the Broadband/Mobile markets become a price driven commodity play.

Think Head Count reduction, Mergers, Aquistions...

@eq you’re spot on, well said! Dan can slash heads all he wants. Without good leadership the ship just gets blown off course.

Companies do not have to stay in their lane, they choose to because it makes Wall Street happy. So companies Verizon’s size with their level of debt generally do not branch out. Yes this market is completely stagnant and mature, it will not grow beyond population growth. The only answer to growth now, real meaningful growth; is to invest in new areas. Verizon tried that but with the wrong people at the helm AND in the trenches. Amazon was a book selling website. A online bookstore. Now they’re the largest IaaS company in the world or close enough. That started as vertical integration. Meaning they needed servers to run their own business. Thus they built data centers and software in an intelligent and modular fashion to lower costs internally. Vertical integration is when a business expands into areas that produce the inputs of their business. For Amazon servers were inputs for their web e-commerce business model. So they moved that in house. Next they did what is considered horizontal expansion. They expanded those servers and the software orchestrating them into a standalone IaaS business that provides servers to most large companies across the world. Now AWS today I believe makes more than their retail business. Later they expanded into logistics again vertical integration. Later they expanded that logistics as a service, horizontal expansion. So all that is to say is does Verizon manufacture it’s own servers or data centers? They do but not as much as possible. Do they telecommunications equipment? Nope. Verizon is not expanding into their own supply chain nor are they expanding into new industries that have a lot of overlap with their own industry. So Verizon will not grow. Unless they begin doing moves like that, there is no growth vector for Verizon.

Zero confidence in Verizon Board, C Level and Directors to figure the puzzle out.

All the talent left the building.

@cn Yes. Mobile phone market penetration surpassed color TV ownership some where around 2001. It's a utility service that needs to run by people who know hiw to run a utility not those who market the latest fad like Pelotron.

@OP Telecom has been a commodity for many years. And the mistake all carriers are making is to spend all their money on finding new customers. Customer Loyalty requires more strategic ability than finding new customers. And being best and building the better mouse trap has escaped modern day corporations. When Acquisition is so much easier than funding Research and Development, and developing truly new and innovative products, well—we find ourselves here—fighting over and trying to win back customers that we probably had 5 years ago and couldn’t hold onto. What does the Verizon Brand stand for? And if you can answer that, prove that AT&T and T-Mobile can’t say the same thing. And if any of these Brands are so terrific, why are they all creating these discount carriers to go after the same consumer targets that their Brands seem unable to attract? Your problems aren’t ‘headcount’—it’s finding bodies with thinking heads intact!
