Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Remote work is better. The “leaders” fighting it are just fighting reality.

The biggest thing leadership still doesn’t understand is that “the office” never created any value. The employees did.

Remote work existed long before Covid and for good reason. No wasted commute time and cost. More time with family. More flexibility. The ability to buy a home somewhere affordable instead of being forced into an expensive city just to sit in an office and take the same Teams calls they could take from home.

And then somehow stink decided to go backwards…

The arguments against remote work keep changing because the old ones don’t hold up. It was productivity. Then collaboration. Then culture. The reality is that talented people don’t need an adult babysitter watching over their shoulder to do their jobs. They need trust.

The companies that understand this will attract the best talent. The ones that don’t will keep losing the best people while wondering why engagement is falling and culture is nonexistent.

The office was never the magic. The people who deliver were. Give them what they want and let them choose where they work and deliver, then watch the productivity, culture and morale 180 from where it is right now.

It is all about work ethic, If a person has a good work ethic they will work regardless if at home or in the office, We see the office high jinx that go on daily with RTO as they leave at 12:00PM and come back at 3:00PM then check-out at 4:30PM. Everytime my Manager is out of office one guy is nowhere to be found and works from home. I am not sure how the Presence Report does not pick this up? He has also used all his Caregiver and Vacation at this point as well has taken sick time and our Manager does not even blink an eye as the Manager is at another location. These types cause low morale and make others say why bother?.

@f8 what exactly is “great” about RTO. The company was more successful under its previous remote and hybrid arrangement. Things have never been worse here since RTO.

@ec you don’t have to defer your departure until you receive your bonus. If you’re on payroll through the end of the year, you’ll get your entire bonus, less taxes, in early March. Leave before the end of the year and it’ll be appropriately prorated.

@e5 nah. Was just holding out to see if they rolled back RTO. They haven’t so now I’ll be leaving after I get my bonus next year. Same reason you saw so many exits first half of this year. This ship is sinking, so I wouldn’t act so proud and mighty.

Want to WFH then go find another job! Too bad you are under qualified. It’s all your fault because of your incompetence.

Bring the call centers back to the states to fill these office buildings! Tech types don't need micromanaging.

The arguments of why keep changing because the real reason is workforce reduction. Get enough people to quit so they can avoid all the negatives (severance, lawsuits, media).

Constant small RIFs with RTO quitting as the plan to reduce headcount. Each 500 tenured people quitting is $30-40M saved, maybe more since no unemployment contribution costs. They want 10’s of thousands gone, which surpasses 10 digits of severance if it is all done through layoffs.

This place can’t reduce the 6mo severance because then the lawsuits faucet turns on. They know it, and cost much more than the 6mo pay. If a bunch start happening it gets the getting the attention of a major firm potentially going after class action ageism or similar, and then national exposure hits.

So expect more misery and everything possible to convince people to leave, meanwhile the ship is taking on so much water in that approach it will probably sink anyways. Or split up and bought in pieces by other entities.

Have you seen the work ethic of some employees while in the office, even before Covid? One can only imagine their work ethic at home. Golf, anyone? :-)

I wish these people would vote with their feet and move on to another company. You probably still complain about losing a week of vacation for three new holidays. I could have just stopped at you probably still complain…..
