Every single one was a step backwards, be it lower base, worse benefits, or less stability. I'm not exaggerating when I say my current situation looks better on paper, even with all the toxicity, layoffs, and everything else we have to deal with on a daily basis. People keep talking about better jobs out there, but I can't find them.

Congratulations @f9, that does not sound like a good time but your perseverance paid off. Thank you for sharing a real story and perspective... they can be rare here.
I left Citi and got a 50 percent bump in comp. This was after 100+ applications and interviews with 4 firms.
It can be done, but the process is grueling.
Generally i am hearing the same on offers and the hiring market knows we dont have options. I made out better all above though as an exception because i was undercompensated at Citi by alot. So im now making [still] below market for Citi but 25% more overall compared to Citi role.
Benefits are superior though where I am at. Stability about the same —banking is not stable right now. If not AI, outsourcing, offshoring or relocation will get you, especially in high cost us locations.
Maybe you need to learn how to negotiate better.
Maybe you're not looking in the right places.
You seem to have good luck with % of applications to interviews and offers, though.
So just start aiming your search to include places which pay/offer perks you prefer.
Try here, they have lots of remote jobs available, too: https://builtin.com/jobs
