Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

NO RIF..PRIVATE PRIORITY MEETING

Well, I guess it was finally my turn.

On August 10th, I received a Teams invite for a “prioritized meeting.” I already knew what it was before I joined. I’ve been following these posts and paying attention to what has been happening within Centene, so I wasn’t surprised.

And strangely enough, I’m not sad. I’m not angry. I really don’t feel any type of way about it. I think that’s because I’ve seen the writing on the wall for a long time.

I’ve been with Centene for 8 years, and one thing I’ve learned is not to get too comfortable here.

For those who don’t know the history, Centene completed its acquisition of WellCare in January 2020. In 2021, Centene announced a restructuring that eliminated approximately 3,000 employees and 1,500 open positions. Then in 2023, another approximately 2,000 employees were laid off. And now here we are in 2026 going through another major restructuring.

At some point, you have to recognize the pattern.

And I want people who were impacted to understand something: this says more about the company than it does about you or your ability to do your job.

My experience with the culture at Centene has not been a positive one. There is a lot of “buddy-buddy” behavior, favoritism and bias. Sometimes the environment honestly gives mean girl/mean boy energy. The company talks about having an open-door policy, but from my experience, that door doesn't always feel very open. You can raise concerns, provide documentation and go through the appropriate channels and still walk away feeling like absolutely nothing was addressed.

I've also watched employees be expected to take on responsibilities outside of what they were originally hired to do, sometimes without the title or compensation that should come with that additional responsibility.

And I’ll say this carefully because I don't throw accusations of racism around lightly: there were situations I personally witnessed or experienced where the difference in how certain groups of employees were treated made me question whether race or other biases played a role. That's my experience and my observation.

I worked as a Business Analyst within the Florida health plan organization, and the culture within my area simply was not what Centene publicly says its culture is supposed to represent.

What I also struggle to understand about these reductions is how the company determines where the cuts are made. If membership and health-plan performance are major drivers, I would expect performance at the health-plan level to be a significant part of those decisions. Instead, employees are left trying to understand why certain positions and departments are eliminated while others remain.

And yes, companies are moving toward AI, automation and doing more with fewer people. That's reality. But companies still have a responsibility to remember that the numbers on an organizational chart represent actual people.

Even the way my notification was handled left a bad taste in my mouth. I was told I could take the remainder of the day off. Afterward, a meeting was held where my situation was discussed with others. I found that extremely tacky and unnecessary. If I wanted coworkers to know that I had been laid off, I should have been allowed to tell them myself.

But at the end of the day, it is what it is.

For everyone who was impacted: don't automatically look at this as the worst thing that could happen to you. Sometimes something that feels like a door closing is really pushing you toward something better. There are companies out here that will value your experience, compensate you fairly and treat you like a human being instead of a headcount.

And for those who survived this round: please don't get comfortable.

Eight years taught me that longevity does not equal security. Your performance does not guarantee security. Your knowledge does not guarantee security. Being loyal to a company does not mean the company will be loyal to you.

Do your job. Learn everything you can. Build your résumé. Keep your LinkedIn updated. Build relationships outside of Centene. Keep your certifications current. And always have a Plan B.

I don't know what the future holds for Centene. Maybe things will improve. I hope they do for the employees who remain.

But Centene also has to understand that repeated restructuring and employee experiences eventually become part of a company's reputation. When people start saying, “Don't apply there because you'll eventually get laid off” or “Don't work there because of the culture,” that's something leadership should pay attention to.

To everybody affected by this round: keep your head up.

This may not be the ending.

It may be your exit.

Before you sign any severance package please make sure you are recognizing your employee rights. Centene usually gives severance packages to keep your mouth shut but by knowing your rights you will understand and know what was illegal in this mass layoff. Below are some things I found out. To answer your question yes, some of us are forced to train our replacements. Think about it, if your position was eliminated there’s no need to train your replacement. Here’s some more information I found.

Please read below:

Replacing Full-Time Employees (FTEs) at Centene with W-2 contractors from an outsourcing vendor like Cognizant is a common corporate strategy (often tied to Centene's multi-million dollar automation and IT deals with Cognizant). It is generally legal for a company to lay off staff and outsource the work to a third-party agency.

However, the replacement becomes illegal if the transition or execution violates specific federal and state employment, discrimination, or labor laws. It is illegal under the following circumstances:1. ⚠️ Discriminatory Selection (Pretextual Layoffs)It is illegal to use an outsourcing transition as a "cover" to terminate employees based on protected characteristics like age, race, gender, or disability.

The Legal Standard: Under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) or Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, a company cannot systematically select older or higher-paid internal employees for termination under the guise of an "optimization" restructuring while shifting the work to a third party.Real-World Context: Centene has previously faced legal scrutiny over this boundary.

For instance, former executives have filed age discrimination lawsuits against Centene, alleging that organizational restructurings were used as a pretext to push out older, tenured employees in favor of outside hires.

  1. ⚠️ Joint Employment & Misclassification Violations

Even if the worker is on Cognizant's payroll as a W-2 employee, Centene can be held legally liable under the Joint Employer Doctrine if Centene exerts too much direct control over how those contractors work.

The Legal Standard:
If Centene managers directly supervise the day-to-day work, set strict shift schedules, dictate specific methods of execution, or control the tools and disciplinary actions of Cognizant contractors exactly as they did with FTEs, the Department of Labor (DOL) or courts can rule that Centene is a "joint employer."The Illegality: If joint employment is proven, Centene can be sued for violating the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)—such as failing to pay overtime or restricting employee benefits—if they treat contractors like staff but deny them internal employee protections

.3. ⚠️ Retaliation Against Whistleblowers

it is illegal to eliminate an FTE's position and hand their duties to a Cognizant contractor if the termination was done to punish the employee.

The Legal Standard:

Under federal whistleblower protection laws (such as those governing Medicare/Medicaid compliance or internal financial reporting), an employer cannot terminate an FTE who has reported internal fraud, system manipulation, or compliance failures. The Illegality: Laying off a worker who raised red flags and immediately backfilling their duties with an outsourced team constitutes illegal retaliation.

  1. ⚠️ WARN Act Violations (Mass Layoff Failures)

If Centene replaces a large block of FTEs with Cognizant contractors at a single site, they must comply with the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.

The Legal Standard:
Companies with more than 100 employees must provide 60 days' advance written notice of a mass layoff or plant closing.
The Illegality:

If Centene immediately fires a large group of FTEs to transition the work to Cognizant without giving the required 60 days' notice (or providing 60 days of severance pay in lieu of notice), the termination process itself is illegal.📊

Quick Summary: Legal vs. Illegal OutsourcingBusiness Action

LEGAL Status➡️ Laying off FTEs due to corporate restructuring and signing an IT service contract with Cognizant.

LEGAL (Standard business operations)➡️ Selecting older, higher-earning FTEs for the layoff while retaining younger workers to interface with contractors.

ILLEGAL (Age Discrimination / Pretext)➡️ Directly managing Cognizant W-2 contractors as internal staff, controlling their schedules, and denying them company benefits.

ILLEGAL (Joint Employer/FLSA Violations)➡️ Laying off more than 50 employees at a site to transition to Cognizant without giving 60 days' notice

If your last day is September 4, 2026 and you haven’t signed a severance package and feel that you have been discriminated against Centene is not replacing your position but replacing you, please reach out to Employee Relations in HR.

We can stop the illegal corporate practices because our lives depend on it. Say ‘No’ to Severance and ‘Yes’ to your rights

@kj For those who has an involuntary layoff severance package maybe the nda applies. But I’m not taking the severance package even for this involuntary layoff, so I can speak to the post.

Did you or do you have to train your replacement?

Totally agree with how they told our team members without us there. They should have let us do it.

@a5 yes there will be life after centene. I also took the VSP and cannot wait for my separation date to arrive, even if it's changed. I'm ready to pack my bag today. Fresh out of school someone reminded me that we work to live and shouldn't live to work. I'm ready for my work life balance to swing much heavier into the Life part. I'll figure out the rest of it.

Jack, we will have to sign NDA for our severance also while employed against company policy. If you have a question you may want to ask here. Almost all staff were offered voluntary package with lay of on or around 9/4. We can only assume they had more then anticipated because we have employees with exit date over a year from now that accepted or applied for the VSP. Now I think it is fair to say centene employees are shocked at how many involuntary layoffs after so many volunteered. Who will be left to carry the work load? Ones left are concerned as well.. Unfortunate all the way around.

Yea I figured business analysts would be in danger the moment they rolled out AI and smart worksheets. Now it's doing most of BA's job with no turnaround time.

@OP You are absolutely correct about a lot of “buddy-buddy” behavior, favoritism and bias. Why was a certain team let go that is needed if Centene is moving to AI and automation?! Seems like it should have been the team that's doing everything manually, but they were protected. The only PLs who don't know what is going on with layoffs are the ones being laid off or work in an area that's not impacted. There's a saying: Throwing rocks and hiding hands that fits what has happened my department.

@OP You captured everything perfectly! I also feel the post layoff team meeting is tacky as he-l. That was you news to share or not. Been through all of this too. I did land in a better position, learned new skills, and found the upside to being laid off.

If I can say anything, do try to make this a positive. Don’t carry anger and bitterness with you. It will affect your interviewing and ability to move on in a positive manner.

Best wishes and take care all. This to shall pass. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
