Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

Part of MH’s opening speech in Vegas

But then they ask the next question, which you dread, So who are you working for? And you say Cengage. The not so polite people say what? Wait, how do you spell that? And then I found my trick is I say it's like a C and then the word engage. And then the lethal third question comes, So what do you do at Cengage? And then typically, I don't know about you, but for me, I was always struggling a little bit.

So what I want to do today with a very specific purpose is give us collective understanding of not only what we do, but why Cengage is an awesome company and why we deserve to win in the battle for the hearts and the minds of our customers.

We have an engagement survey and I can only implore you fill it out. I really do not care what you say.

Meaning it doesn't have to be like, Oh yeah, everything is great and like, but engage with it and like, say what's wrong, say what's right and engage your help with each other and help each other also not only in the survey, but also in the day-to-day, like interact with the product group, interact with the marketing group and make sure that we have a highest level of engagement because that really is a prerequisite for our productivity and our success.

when you have never sold anything, you assume sales is just sells, but any clown would know that you can't make this structure work.
I agree with the others one here, all of these changes are to make Cengage ready for an IPO. This is the cleanest structure for an outsider/investor to understand. 1 company, 1 organization. 1 leadership team, 1 sales team.

My colleague is working with a Recruiter and the first thing she was asked , were you Part of the May Reorg at Cengage?

@1hw and have to know how your lines of business function and not throw it all to Cengage reps like they can magically start selling ELT, research materials to libraries, etc. what a dolt.

NK on paper looks to be taking control and MH power is diminishing....

Can someone explain to NK, as a leader you actually need to LEAD, SPEAK, and look like a leader. MAYBE even buy a suit and a tie and stop wearing dirty tennis shoes to the meetings.

@m1 I’m no longer with the company either, but as a manager it was extremely easy to look at the minimum 5 employee engagement responses and filter by title, longevity, or another category like employee’s location, then add another 6th person, and see how results have changed.

@OP I just returned to the board after leaving just under a year to go to see if anything is changed. It all looks depressingly familiar. Honestly I was hoping maybe things had settled down, but the themes seem unchanged, people treated badly, a new cast of people at the top and the business drifting downward with schills talking things up and despairing resignation by most people.
Sad

I've worked on sending out surveys internally, and helped with an Engagement Survey once. I'm relatively confident your answers are not being tied to your PII in a way the admin can access it. I'm going to assume the survey is still created by, and the final report compiled by, a third party vendor.

The vendor would never risk any sort of lawsuit to enable personally vindictive executives trying to find out who wrote something negative. The vendor would deny that request because a) they're not going to jeopardize their reputation, and b) risk a lawsuit for leaking PII. Also, Cengage is just one of many clients, and I doubt the vendor would do anything but laugh off an executive requesting the vendor to do anything above the contract requirements. Cengage isn't a big enough client to risk any of that.

It happened similarly when I would launch internal surveys outside of the ES. I, first of all never, had a request for any individual surveys, and, if asked for data in aggregate, would delete any PII.

I did have your PII because I needed it to ensure you and only you answered a survey, but we were trained very well on the legal and ethical issues on PII. We also needed your email to follow up in case you didn't answer surveys.

That said, I also took my responsibility to adhere to standards and laws about keeping surveys "anonymous." I never looked at responses tied to your email, and coached our team a lot on PII and regulations about anonymity.

But I also got let go, so maybe my adherence to regulations wasn't particularly appreciated. Well, in many cases I know it wasn't, but I hope some people on my team carried the torch of ethics.

But if the ES is still released by a third party, you're more than likely safe from being "doxxed."

If it's an internal survey, I would be less convinced that your PII is safe. Then again, your manager would also be able to discover if you didn't answer a survey if they really wanted to. In my opinion, just be honest. Giving everything a 10 out of 10, we love Cengage!!! Is dead giveaway that you faked the response, and would likely be deleted during data cleanup.

MH doesn’t care what you put on the survey! !! Does Apollo or his babysitter in HR- KT ?

All surveys will get perfect marks. 10 out 10 on everything! MH is just the BEST in his his own mind!

Don’t fall for the trap it’s not Anonymous!
Give bo feedback and mark 10 out of 10 this will send a message to the babysitter!

Tone deaf as usual...But he's not wrong. When I worked at Cengage those conversations always ended with "Oh, so you guys are the reason I had to buy all those useless textbooks in college, huh?"

@b1 100 percent. I heard it too.

It is so offkey and tone deaf that it reads as parady.

Weird…. In more than ten years with them I filled out double that amount of “surveys” and it was clear that the employee opinions never mattered. And when I left, they didn’t care to ask me why either. Empty words as always

Thanks for sharing this. Great little thought, but it would be better if it matched well with the reality. Are there that many product people still located in the U.S.? As a former, it seems that most are now based 8n India or something ...

I noted that Cengage is revising ALL of ots Intro Psych texts this year. While new ads are always a good thing, revising five or six at the same time seems like a cynical money-grab. Prolly hoping for some large takeaways prior to the IPO, I dunno.
