Looking for RIF-proof role to stay in for next 20 years until retirement

With all the talk about RIFs lately, I'm thinking strategically about my next move here.

I'm not necessarily looking to grow, lead, innovate, take on stretch assignments, contribute, or “make an impact.” At this point, I'd really just like to find a role that is unlikely to be eliminated or increase in responsibilities, and that I can comfortably occupy for the next 20 years until retirement.

Ideally I'm looking for something where:

  • The work is important enough that they can't eliminate the position, but not so important that people can easily identify what I do
  • Answers within the parameters of a maximum of 4 possibilities, no judgment or thinking required
  • Clearly defined responsibilities so I can confidently say “that's outside my scope.”
  • There is little expectation to volunteer for additional work.
-“That's how we've always done it” is considered a perfectly acceptable process improvement strategy.
  • My eventual career goal of “retiring from here” is viewed as a strength rather than a lack of ambition.

For those of you who have successfully moved internally to survive multiple rounds of RIFs: what types of roles should I be looking for?

I'm trying to find my forever home here, not my next career challenge. Ideally, I'd like to get into a role where I can learn a minimum, and then hand everything else off to someone who is still interested in career development.

Any internal career survival experts have advice on which jobs we have internally that suit these goals?

When I was an engineering manager in the defense business there was only one person in the business who could do the required maintainabily and availability analysis. He was on the point of a nervous breakdown over the possibility of losing his job. He had the job the poster is searching for. I reassured him. I said truthfully if we only had half the work I would still need him. He retired early. Then I hired him back for years as a contractor!

I worked for MDT for over 20yrs. I was considered a subject matter expert, a needed commodity, and low risk from being laid off. I was RIF'd on May 7. 45% of the people let go on May 7 from SR were in their 50's and were seasoned employees with solid skill sets. Leadership doesn't care, you are an employee number. Job security is your ability to seek employment and it's an unforgiving jungle.

Take your thumb and your pointer finger and put it in the shape of an L, then place it on your forehead and look in the mirror. Voila!! There’s your answer.

Correct .... every person I've met in my 20 yrs with MDT is willing to give you 85% of the answer. If your lazy you'll continue to run back for another scrap or two. My choice figure it out and now I'm a domain expert people come to for answers, even ones who own the problem. 20yrs and still kicking azz every day in the office.

Become a professional and generational welfare recipient. You don’t ever have to work. Politicians will be fighting for your rights and entitlements.

In Medtronic: Any type of EA or anyone with "assistant" after their name and over 50 years old, and contracts analyst. Also some possibilities in HR.

Out of Medtronic: teachers and "academics". Basically anyone in education.

@b9 probably if you are an engineer think HS physics or math teacher. Probably you can just show up and do the same thing for 30 years, get auto raises every year. Perfect job security. And summers off.
Don’t rule out middle school math or science either.
