Job Title Changes Coming?

In a recent skip level meeting, someone from the group asked a question regarding job titles and responsibilities. The reply was that every employee is being audited to verify that they meet the necessary requirements. So, what does that mean? Will people be retitled if they don't have a degree or if they are in a title that was selected out of convenience by their manager?

Should I be worried that I'm in an 'engineer' role but I don't have a college degree? I didn't ask for this title, I asked for a raise. They gave me the job title. Now, they've promoted me to a principal band because I asked for another raise. I like the money but I feel like i'm going to be shown the door if this actually happens.

Will they maybe just change my title? Will I take a pay cut or do I stay in the new role with a salary that's way right of center? Is any of this actually happening or are we just trying to scare more people into quitting?

@sn KD4337 was demoted from ED/AVP to Director, then Director to Expert level IC. I understand that Director and Expert Lvl IC are both still L3, but its a good example. He was saved twice due to the good boy network and the need for healthcare continuance.

Are you crazy? There have been so many Technical Directors who have lost their titles and now are Assoc Directors or Level 2. Their salary does not change but will not get raises if at mid-range or higher. I personally know 7 people who have experienced this in the past year and they are rather bitter and jaded by the experience. I agree I have not seen a Principal downgraded to Lead but they may change their title and the salary range between titles in some is huge. Especially if you have gone from an MTS to another title and doing the same job basically as this to has happened to many and the difference in salary range can be 75K or more.

In 28 years I’ve never seen anyone retitled in a manner that dropped them a level or reduced pay. Ie you are not going to be retitled down from Principal to the next rung dung.

@bq Honestly though. What do the AD’s do? They host teams meetings and shovel sh-t downhill. That’s it. I cover for my mgr when he’s on vacation and it’s all nonsense when I fill in. The job of an AD is to apply pressure downhill and smooth the edges when reporting uphill.

OP... Do some research on HROS. You can look up any job description, requirements like required # direct reports, education, salary range, # of ee in that position. In some cases you can drill down to see individuals. Education and experience are often viewed as one once you are in that role. Once your Dir/AVP submits you for a job title change, HR has to review the justification for the new role and any salary adjustment, not an ez process.

HR conducts a mgt survey every year or so where they ask you questions about your specific job responsibilities- if your doing such-n-such task and what per cent of time you spend on it. Also they ask you to list other tasks and time you do that are not in the questions. This is evaluated against the job description template. After reviews, they determine if the general population in that job title match the job desc/title/salary/level, and also flag individual outliers. This enables them to keep up with industry standards for the same type of work and pay. For the outliers, some get promoted/demoted/salary bumps. For the general population, depending on the results analysis, determines the pay range for that job, a bump in pay, no increase next year (over paid for work), and/or title change. It's a fair process and I have seen it work many times in all the situations described.

People have certainly been retired down. But salary doesn't get reduced. You just may not like your SMI for a few years.

They progressed your job title so you could keep getting raises? Wow, that's never happened for me.

Retired, not retitled.

Sounds like HR is conjuring up a new scheme to make people more miserable and/or just outright get rid of people…

They do NOTHING to the benefit of the employee. It’s always in the company’s favor!

Nothing new. They play this game every few years. If your job functions are in line with the corporations directions then your scale goes up. If they’re looking to axe your stuff then your scale goes down.

Normally the new titles could cause your salary range to change, not your actual salary.
