Thread regarding 3M layoffs

The career dead end

I wish somebody had warned me about this before I joined. I came here with hope and now I'm desperate and looking for any way out or I'll stay stuck in the same position forever. 3M is a horrible employer.

@h5

Add yearly layoffs to that list. 3M as a workplace that supported long careers that in turn spawned technology platforms is long dead amd buried !

@t4 Solventum?

You mean the place with opportunities for career advancement and mostly remote jobs? The company that hasn't been having annual rounds of layoffs? Where employee satisfaction is pretty high?

That Solventum?

Could be worse! You could’ve been one of us who was duped into leaving 3M for Solventum!

@h5 the company CTO is clueless and the fact that BB has done absolutely nothing about it is even worse.

Only the 16 (directors& above) gets to enjoy the monetary benefits. They will push the working level to work harder and harder.

Meanwhile at a recent TownHall, CTO announced he wants to see world class materials science work coming out of 3M.

Average pay check, measly yearly pay increases, technical career progression pretty much bogged down....and yet expectation is world class work ? Really ???

How disconnected is the CTO from reality ???

If you are an ambitious new employee with an advanced degree from a top tier school, this is not the place. Even in CRL, which is supposed to the crown jewel in 3M, tasked with developing new technologies; advancing is very hard. One option is joining management, long hours spent mostly in endless and pointless meetings; where promotions can happen every 3 to 4 years, irrespective of any meaningful accomplishments if one can keep upper management happy ! Pretty boring work but the $$ $ keep flowing to keep up with post Covid inflated living expenses!

Internal progression is confirmed Dead! Just look at the external new hires to fill in the leadership positions.

You can't teach Old dogs New tricks!

As so many have said already, progression there is dead. Grow yours skills, grow your network and move to a company that values your worth. You will not progress there.

It is bad. I started back in the "good years" of 3M and it was exciting. If you did a good job and stuck around long enough, doors would open. Not the case anymore. Someone said it already, but yes about 3-5 years ago those doors of advancement were closed, locked, and left to rot.

Work on building your network, grow your skills, and get to know what else is out there. You will thank yourself later.

It is absolutely breathtaking to see the favoritism in HR in promoting their own ranks while the entire organization stagnates. The same with legal affairs. Every attorney is 17 or higher regardless of the quality of their work. And boy, is it a cluster in ogc under rainy Datsun. Same for OIPC because that’s where flimflam was spawned. When this is the level of ‘conduct’, you can fully expect to see an imbalanced organization.

It is clear that senior leaders are making it difficult for workers to get advancement. Upgrades to 13& equi need SVP approval. Plus they strip off the LTI for 14/15 earlier. There are less people in the middle zone now.

@cv it is awful! Doesn’t matter if you’re RTO or remote, there’s no advancement for any of us. I suspect bare minimum increases for all too.

Until the last three or four years, there was still mobility.

But recently, everything has dried up and they're very clear that there's no opportunity for advancement.

This place is awful.

Good luck. It's not a bad thing to have on your resume. Cultivate your network and plan for the future.

With the rapidly deteriorating sales outloo in 2H, be prepared for the annual headcount restructuring exercise by end of this year 2026.

The deeds of leadership hired from the outside being guided by absolutely clueless consultants who laugh their way to the bank after every single cutback decision has now come to roost. The results of doing the wrong things, cutting the wrong people at the wrong times have come to roost. The hope that doing the same things wrong over and over will yield a different result is all this bunch of pirates has.

You are correct that it no longer is the place to have a career, however good to get on your CV and move on to a company that there are opportunities and care about employees.
