Stories like this capture the problems with Bayer's business but they miss the human part of why this deal was such a catastrophe. Bayer leadership played along with any story criticizing Monsanto, making no effort to set the record straight and often adding fuel to the fire. Add to that, the 50-50 way new leadership roles divided between people from a genuine global headquarters operation and the branch office backwater team from North Carolina, it was doomed to fail as talent fled in droves. Toxic incompetency from Germany just made it obvious that hope was a lost cause.
