Salesforce is undergoing layoffs in a story familiar to all here: top, tenured staff targeted, no logic to changes, H1b questions, etc. Maybe this isn't as different as it feels or all executives just stupid, selfish @ssholes?

No, all large and tech companies are going through large re-orgs. Because companies like McKinsey are hired for 10's - 100's of millions of dollars and the push for the last year is automation, AI, remove employee cost. The fourth part is hire McKinsey people or reps as executives or board members.
End result is, more stock options, more bonuses and everything looks great on paper until 1-5 years later. Some of those big re-orgs are hiring their people back as they are understanding what they have done to their own company. But until you get rid of the executives that have no clue of what they are doing, nothing will ever change.
