Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Is there a way to volunteer for surplus ?

Management employee. I declined the move to Charlotte. Found a new job but need the ATT severance. The original letter states my end date is up to the discretion of my leadership. My boss is new and his boss as well. Been waiting on answers since May. Anyone have a suggestion for how I can self volunteer for surplus ? ..is that even the correct terminology?

@p3 what was the date of the surplus? I’m starting to wonder if I should get an attorney involved? No damages yet though. I asked my boss to “start the process” back on June 5. I don’t use the same terminology as you guys are suggesting.. but close enough.

I know 3 people on the Tech side who volunteered and they were included in the next round. Only one was denied as they wanted to keep the title and promote someone into it so that person eventually decided to leave on their own.

" You volunteer by telling your supervisor. Your real issue is you need it to happen now so you can start your new job. That’s a no go there. "

This person is correct. It is all about the timing.

At this point, your AD and Director would much rather lose the "volunteer" to surplus rather than someone they will have to surprise with it. Just easier for all involved.

But they cannot just take a volunteer and surplus them with severance at any time, outside of any larger surplus event. The timing has to work out.

If you volunteer then they know you want to leave soon anyway. They’ll simply wait for you to go instead of gifting you severance.

You volunteer by telling your supervisor. Your real issue is you need it to happen now so you can start your new job. That’s a no go there. You’ll need to quit.

Depends on your role, if your'e in sales this is a big NOPE, having g been in sales for 23+ years I've never seen this of well for a seller, ask to be considered and you'll get tagged as having lost your mojo and if/when you have a drop in production they will be more inclined to advance the PIP process, or move you to module that is underperforming to try and force you to leave-I've seen that happen several times.

@c5 would you leave 6 months salary on the table and walk out? I doubt it.

If you've got another job, why not just skip? If your goal is another job with a different company, your single goal should be getting on board with the new job!
You're foolish to blow the opportunity.

If you declined the move and it was more than x miles to new location you should get severance. Most management chains would not want to drag this out unless you work on something important that has a future end date, because they have to justify that to higher ups who really dont want to hear it.

Yes, here’s the way:

State to Boss: “I’d like to volunteer for the next surplus”.

Very complex, I know. Read it twice.

Go out on benefits as long as you can and start working for the new company.

@OP Don't let them know you're interested in leaving—because if you do, they won't let you go easily. A friend of mine was promised a voluntary separation package, but when the time came, they told her "no." Now they're waiting for her to quit on her own so they don't have to pay severance. In fact, her boss even said to her, "Why don't you just leave?" Work from 100% of the time and they surplus you.
