Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Finally it's over.. My two cents

I applied for VSP and had an exit date of 12/2026. Started applying for jobs the day that I put in the application as I was seeing the writing on the wall of what was to come. Fortunately for me I had two interviews on Monday 08/10/2026, received offers from both companies just following the end of the interview. Made a decision in that moment they needed me to start on the 24th, but that after all the insanity at Centene that I needed a week to clear my head before I began my new adventure. They wouldn't give me two weeks notice if I was laid off tomorrow so there is no reason to believe that it is required in return. BEST DECISION I HAVE EVER MADE!
For those of you that are stilling fighting for members I see you and I know how hard you work. I want you to be aware of the shift that has been happening slowly for the last 2-3 months, around the time the VSP talk began. Supervisors are to drive number with no care for members or employees. They are to be sure that if there is any-way for an employee to be on coaching that they end up on it. They sit in meetings telling us that they know the workloads are unrealistic and at the same time really do not care or intend to change it. This is only going to get worse, as head count decreases and there are less staff to serve members, expectations will grow. I am fully convinced that the goal is to avoid payment of VSP to as many people as possible. If you remember the language in all the documentation - you must meet the expectation and metrics to be eligible for VSP benefits.
If you haven't already done so, dust off your resume. Begin applying and let your skills show you what doors are opening next. You are on a sinking ship, if you work in a member facing role you know this, member are frusterated by the limit to their benefits, inability to get needed care, reduction in services and doctors that are constantly walking away from their networks for one reason or another.
Either way three workdays since my separation I have never been happier and am for a change excited to begin work on Monday.

“They are to be sure that if there is any-way for an employee to be on coaching that they end up on it.”

As they should. If employees aren’t pulling their weight it is standard practice to provide coaching and if no improvement, follow up with additional coaching up to PIP/LCA. This is not unique to Centene. This is at pretty much any job. That’s not to say a bad leader he-l bent on running someone off won’t be in the mix, but that’s not the point/topic at hand here. I’m speaking in general terms.

“I am fully convinced that the goal is to avoid payment of VSP to as many people as possible.”

@OP I disagree with this. You sound upset that you didn’t get the VSP pay but if that is not the case and I’m reading it wrong then I apologize. I’d be upset too. I am sorry your end date was later than anticipated but it sounds like you couldn’t have taken 9/4 even if it was offered with the majority of others because of your new role starting 8/24.

I’m not being sarcastic or hateful. I really am glad you found a new job that you’ll be happier at. If you needed that week off to get a recharge then you were right to take it because I would have done the same. I agree with the previous response. We all deserve to be happy and I hope you find that at the new venture.

Good for you if you left and that’s what you wanted. I’m not dusting off my resume. I don’t feel like I am on a sinking ship. I am happy here. I’m not going anywhere as long as they’ll keep me. If you were unhappy here and you’re happy in your new role, then I am happy for you. We all deserve to be where we fit best and can be our best selves.

@c7

Take it!

Anyone who's offered a comparable or better position elsewhere (with whateve rcriteria means most to each individual, be that pay, benefits, scheduling, etc.) should not hesitate to TAKE it!

Clearly, Centene is a sinking ship being led by gaslighting, mindfu*king liars, who do NOT have their members' or employees' best interest in mind, when making their endlessly BAD decsions about how to conduct business.

This place is not going to improve, things are obviously continuing to just get worse. Save yourself from the ongoing aggravation and uncertainty. Don't wait, don't hesitate. This is a no-brainer. If offered something decent/better, go for it. Get out while you can.

Is there any recourse? They shut down all communication avenues to discuss the end dates. Mine is Aug 2027. Show me the business need. There is. Or enough work and we are put in Coaching or PIP due to low productivity.
My Director said she was not part of the discussion of who stays and who goes. That makes no sense. Who is making these calculations if it is not the managers and directors. Are they just lying to us?
I have gone thru my direct leadership, HR. The VSP link was disabled immediately.
I send an email to my VP and Sarah London.
So much for transparency and One CenTeam.

I have an opportunity for an in-person position. My team was safe this round from lay-offs. Clinical pharmacist. Hours are good, pay is just slightly less with better benefits. Not sure if I should take it or not….

@OP I saw the writing on the wall as well after the spring layoffs. My workload was becoming unmanageable, asked for relief, assured I would get it, and never happened. I interviewed two places and was able to land one of the positions. And what do you know, as I’m giving notice all this VSP, ISP craziness started. I feel as though I had a guardian angel watching over me. One month in and couldn’t be happier and feeling totally blessed.

Congratulations OP! To all those on the fence, sometimes it’s just better to move on and save the grief. That little bit of money is not worth your mental or physical health. Not to mention, obviously there is very little intent to make good on the VSP program extended exit dates given what many have shared on here.

I have a VSP date of late next year. I can't wait that long and don't trust that I would ever see that money. I turned in my resignation last week and will return to direct client care. I will miss my teammates and wish them well but you’re exactly right that this is a sinking ship.

@OP GOOD FOR YOU! I unfortunately have a late 2027 exit date and am already seeing and experiencing the metric talks shoved down our throats, stay productive and stay focused. Absolute joke!

Good for you. I am familiar with that practice. Shuffling papers and stacking the deck. Best wishes. VSP recipient here with 9/4 after 26 years.
