Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Racism

I’ve been experiencing so much racism since I entered this company. I am not even sure who to go to about this or who to trust, but this has been such a terrible experience. This is something this company needs to work on.

Every group can claim rascism. On steriods since Hans cried.... depends on individuals you interact with.

Meritocracy is long gone.

@c7 I have seen a number of issues reported to HR/Ethics. Evidence was given. Emails, Jabber and Slack messages, text messages and more.

HR/Ethics, as was mentioned, is there to protect Verizon and will work hard to find reasonable doubt so they can say it wasn't intentional, it was a misunderstanding, etc. Just like any defense attorney would do for an actual trial but they get to do it as an attempt to avoid a trial that they may lose.

Some complaints took over a year to get a final decision and with as much empathy as possible, the people who made the complaints were told, "I understand that you may not agree with the outcome but, and I am being totally transparent, we could not find anything actionable." They spoke to the people who were accused and they said "Not me". They spoke to witnesses and, in the name of self preservation, they said, "I don't recall that happening"

The evidence is never mentioned. One person went back to get screenshots of Slack messages but found that, after a Slack update a few days prior, their entire message history had been deleted. Not sure if Verizon is required to keep a backup of all Slack communications but in this case the person had no ability to review previous messages.

If you have proof, save it. But know that giving it to an attorney may result in Verizon coming after you. Find an attorney and tell them the details and ask if you are legally able to share evidence with them. Make sure you protect yourself.

Verizon prohibits sharing, recording, screenshoting, etc meetings and communication for obvious reasons. And it is also so if evidence is given to law enforcement, attorneys, regulatory agencies, etc, Verizon can try to take action against the person who blew the whistle.

Verizon is betting you don't have enough money to afford a better attorney than the hundreds that they have. Which is why they want you to come to them first.

Do not give them the ability to build a reasonable doubt defense ahead of time. That would be like playing poker with only your cards face up on the table.

Also, in a civil complaint, it is preponderance of evidence (evidence suggesting the claim is more likely true than not), not reasonable doubt, that is needed to win.

Maybe other companies are like this, I don't know. But I have worked for and with many large companies and I have never seen any that treated people like Verizon does. Only by the grace of God have I not been pulled into this type of mess myself. But I am aware and ready if that changes.

Try working in midstate where the chief stewards openly promote racism behind the backs of their own members. It’s pretty disgusting the nonsense that’s condoned by management and CWA 1103 itself.

@CP Human nature never changes, if you report, note the consequences, someone reported me about something I had no involvement, I was harassed by internal VZ, cleared my name, yet threatened to fire me because someone else reported a lie.

Try working in Brooklyn. The racism and reverse racism is terrible.

I would report it. This is not how Verizon should be. But you need proof. Bias against a particular group is not enough without evidence. The IT and management is mostly Indians so I have to guess...you're not Indian.

Not all Indians are bad.

@OP Consult with an employment lawyer to see if you can build a successful case. If yes, you’ll have to bring your complaint to HR at some point but HR’s function is to protect the company not the employee.

Also start looking for another job. Not all companies are this bad.

Find another career or company, be brave enough to face these things, its everywhere. One thing the leaders need to know is the Indians nepotism and that should be stopped. Dan did a great job in cleaning some of that.

This company hates Hispanics. Indian nepotism is out of control.

Absolutely agree with s-xism. I was a victim. It is definitely not everyone, but there are some select clown that still prefer to promote men.

@OP Don't forget s-xism. There are so many managers with small ones that dismiss and/or ignore any manager without one.

They are spoken to in condescending tones and, if the cameras are on, get an "eye roll" when they try to speak up or contribute in meetings.

Since the affected managers are multicultural, racism may play a role as well. Or would that be nationalism, since the offenders are over overwhelmingly from one national origin. But, to be fair, I have seen it from a few white managers as well.

It is surprising that they haven't banded together to report it but since reporting anything gets shutdown and dismissed as unsubstantiated rumors faster than you can say "delighted" they probably feel it would be a waste of time.

A "metoo" movement at Verizon would be devastating for the PR department. Could you imagine?
