Sept 1 (Reuters) - UnitedHealth's insurance unit said on Tuesday that a broad range of conditions will no longer need prior approval, effective October 1, as it aims to eliminate prior authorization for 30% of healthcare services by the end of this year.

Prior auth was a shame to increase profits, nothing to do with patient care or healthcare costs. If it’s being removed, then they found a new shame to take its place. They will not just give up the profits Prior auth creates, without another way to deny/delay claims.
@b8 To refute, or poke holes in your argument, regardless, they were and already are reducing number of employees by using AI to deny prior authorizations. At least this way, perhaps more patients (members) will get some of their legitimate claims approved.
@OP Interesting - if you drop a significant amount of PA - guess you need less staff. Been saying it for years, if you are approving x% of precerts - then there is no value in reviewing them - guess what- need less staff - see a trend?
I have had insurance that didn't require prior authorization for a lot of services and guess what? They still didn't pay for most things once the claims went in. It's a sham.
