I have never seen anything official announcing that a PIP process would be enforced on the lowest ranked 5% in the new performance system.
Where did this all come from ? … or is it all rumour mill ?

No, its not "Exxon's playbook" or "Cut and Paste' or anything else just because they need to cut the bottom percentage of the pathetic losers , many of whom post incessantly on this site, but do keep thinking that if it makes you feel any better, lol.
@fd is correct. Worked for XOM, and ~5-10% mandatory PIP is cut and paste from Exxon’s playbook.
@g4 this is true,
@g4 - Negative
Surely they have to throw you some severance just to keep you quiet even under as PIP. Particularly if it is not a true PIP but a ranking cut.
@f1 it’s corporate risk management tool to layoff without WARN or reputation risks. PIPs in O&G are not designed to improve employee performance. 5-10% of US workforce will laid off every year. Backfills are to India or not at all.
It’s not matter of if but when you are targeted for PIP.
The question is if being on a PIP is really about improving performance or is it about building documentation to ensure a lawsuit-proof termination? I suspect we're going back to the pre-2020 practice where two years in a row in the lowest cluster means being fired. Unless, of course, layoffs are announced and the PIPs are immediately shown the door.
@OP
I heard it from 2 different managers that were told this in a meeting earlier in the year. But, I heard it second hand. We won’t know for sure until next year.
My supervisor literally sent an email to his team explaining that's what they're being told is the new way to cut people.
