@a1 On the positive side, receiving it as a lump sum means less chance of it interfering with unemployment. Some states, including Texas, (can?) treat the severance checks as continued wages, so you don't receive unemployment benefits.

Lump sum, no option for any other payment. Su-ks because it likely throws you into higher tax bracket depending on amount.
