Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Activity Tracking

So apparently we’re being told our activity is being tracked… but no one can tell us what activity they’ve tracking yet. 😂

Like… what exactly are you monitoring? Keyboard activity? Teams status? Logins? Time in applications? Mouse movement? Because I’M WORKING LOL.

“We’ll let you know soon what’s being tracked” is such a wild thing to tell employees. What the f&$% are we doing here?! 😂

@a3 When i heard that, for work related venting, I would text my work friends. To play games, I would use the WF chat to talk in code..sometimes in hebrew, yiddish, or just type sentences that didn't make sense just to play.

I on several occasions over the course of a year on wfh days, we were so efficient with work, you can login and be done with all your work for the day in 15 minutes. The rest of the day entailed just heading off emails so you wouldn't get swamped. Moving the mouse every so often so it wouldn't set away.
Managed thru play thru Super Mario bros 1, 2 and up to world 5 before more work come in to do. Worked for about an hour then finished up my game.

Just dump every email and random file you have in copilot and ask it to flesh it out with additional detail and create presentations with the info. No need to use them, just need to look busy and bang away at AI because reasons. They want us to play games and jump through hoops, ok, they are running the show and I can jump through hoops while I wait for my golden ticket. I've accepted that HY will successfully destroy the company and just don't care anymore.

They are monitoring days and hours office. But go ahead and move your mouse around to make it seem like you’re busy.

the type of tracking being done depends on what function you are in, but everyone is being activity-tracked.

There is a newly developed scorecard being rolled out company wide. the metric is "average number of hours active" and right now it's at the average/aggregate level for the leader's team for the month. It's shown separately for US and I&P. Draw your own conclusions

India has a problem at least in my org. I have heard the activity tracking average was less than 4 hours. Glad we shipped our jobs there.

Is activity tracking for the days you are in office only? Or also tracking activity on days when you WFH?

The best part is that if the OC and their directs were subjected to this kind of mindlessly simplistic tracking, a good percentage of them would be fired as being non-productive.

@eq you got it. That’s what I do now. My productivity has gone down since our manager told us about activity tracking because I need to stretch everything out. Sloooooowwwww down so you can fill every minute with clicks.

@b8 now years ago we had a work process where we had keyed in data. The time on the counter towards those hours only advanced if you were constantly keying and working. You let off the keys the time stops.
So you can sit there for hours if you will but it doesn't count because you're not inputting commands.

I think that's what they are getting at.

I’m not busy and I’m not playing games to pretend I’m busy. I can’t help I don’t have enough work. They should have identified me a long time ago if any of this was true. Lay me off already!

Activity monitoring directly incents inefficient and timewasting behavior, and punishes people who try to find efficiencies. Why do something in 10 minutes that could take 30, if you're just going to be punished for being idle for 20 minutes. Its a deeply stupid management decision, any benefit you see in being able to dodge severance costs is going to be offset by losses in efficiencies. Especially if you're blindly implementing monitoring across the board. Anyway, since there started to be rumors about activity monitoring, I've been deliberately aligning my work style to meet the new measures.

I used to have a bunch of outlook rules to manage my inbox, I've scotched all of those and now click and scroll through every email individually. I try to reply to most of them as well.

I used to multitask during useless meetings and try to get ahead on other tasks. Unless I'm pressed for time/on a deadline, I no longer do this. I drag tasks out rather than multitasking.

I'm more prone to set up meetings than to send teams messages or emails.

Everything I produce, I feed it to copilot and ask it to review and annotate. Sometimes I will do this for multiple interations. Most of the time this results in few or no adjustments (I'm not a huge fan of AI), but its a pretty passive process and easy way to appear like you're doing work. Also runs up the AI bills

Would welcome other suggestions for dealing with the new regime

Context matters, so the firm does need to elaborate. However, the people creating these mandates are not intellectuals so that will never happen. They are simply doers.

@as
Right?
I have had a mouse jiggler since 2021 and haven't had a problem.
I work when the work comes in. They created this mess. Teams isn't supposed to be a tracking tool but if they want to use it in a way it wasn't designed for, then I will use tools to counter that.

Did they miss the email from the CEO that said that in person collaboration is THE most important thing that we do? Apparently. PC activity might be the worst metric one could come up with. They literally put negative value on thinking and in person collab. Can't make this S up.

In addition to keystrokes and mouse movement, I was told they are using activity estimates to determine how much of an 8 hour day we are busy.

They assign a segment of "busy time" for things like sending a Teams chat or replying to one. There is also segment time assigned when you submit a Copilot inquiry or reply to a Copilot response. All this gets added up and they have "time busy" for everyone. They also discuss the averages for the enterprise, each LOB, and geographically.

Why does this matter? The OC believes that the average WF person has 7 hours of work per day- meaning there's capacity. Some groups or regions have lower average numbers. This is why they feel confident that tens of thousands of layoffs can still happen, since most of use are sitting around for part of the day. Yes, they think we are overstaffed

I think all of this is BS and a ridiculous way to run a company. However, this is what I've been told by my leadership and gives us insight into the bias they use to justify further cuts

Manager told us to increase keystrokes so we all run numerous Tableau or Jira reports. I reply to almost every email even if it just says “thanks”. Waste of time for sure but there will definitely be increased trackable activity.

I heard they aren’t releasing what they are tracking in terms of activity so people can’t game the system. Yes, this is the kind of relationship Wells has with its employees.

@a3 “office collaboration” takes more than 5 mins, supposedly :). Using Teams for a measurement of time away isn’t best approach. And my team in IT is 24x7 oncall for our offshore counterparts who were hired to take care of things. Since time logged on after hours doesn’t quite count that way, our manager provided some protocols he came up with to help keep report stats down, smh.
