I was a top performer for years, always ignored inter-office politics, mostly got along with everybody and survived every layoff so far. A few weeks ago something happened that I couldn't ignore and had me report my manager, and now here I am, laid off. Am I wrong to find this suspicious?

@ev Nothing is done until after my last day of employment. They could still terminate someone who took VSP if they feel like there is cause. Things can always get worse.
These people are not being held accountable and never will. How often in the reorg do you see these toxic PL demoted? Never. Psychological safety is just another buzzword. Hoping the best for everyone that has experienced it.
@f8 I’m so old that I still remember burying my little brother, Methuselah.
Okay, not really! Lol
Same in Louisiana. I am sure its retaliation due to the director of CM not liking me.
@c1 I am the oldest in my team
@ep Why would anyone want to do business with any company where unethical behavior is okay just so long as it cannot be proven. That would be like me saying that I am totally fine with my son stealing from the candy jar at the general store just so long as I nor anyone else can prove it.
@cn so what will any of them do if they are looking at these posts ? Shaking in my boots. lol. I’m afraid they have done the worst so bring it on.
@d1 1000%. I was the oldest on my team of 9. Top performer.
@d1 Thinking it, and proving it are two different questions, I'm afraid.
During a general workforce reduction, that will be an even higher bar to clear.
One of the reasons I took the VSP is I considered myself vulnerable to layoff due to my age and length of service. I'm sure they thought I was expensive-and decided to remove the target from my back.
I have never lost a job in my entire career. Is it a coincidence that the first time ever is at age 60? Anyone else thinking this is ageism?
@can you share what state? And congratulations! I think I have my ears about you.
@bs Sorry, but I am not comfortable sharing the attorney's info who I retained in a previous lawsuit bc we all know that HR & Admins are watching this page. That would allow them to figure out who posted this. Just do a Google search for attorneys who specialize in Employment Law. It was a stressful experience, but I was successul in the end. And had to sign a NDA regarding the terms. Good luck!!
@a4 No. I just contacted an attorney who specialized in wrongful termination.
@OP no that’s called retaliation. I would file charges. I am in the same boat and add the oldest on my team. Hmm. I have started the process.
@a2 Can you share the name of the lawyer please ?
Not surprised at all. Had it happen to me. Funny thing compliance department is the worst, biggest offenders.
Being revengeful and petty are indicative of unevolved mindsets.
Don't expend energy on people who purposefully work to sc--w you over.
Karma/the universe/God will exact revenge on them for you...they will be paid back for how they've mistreated you and others. You don't have to lift a finger for it to happen. Rest assured, it will.
Instead, acknowledge it for what it is, be grateful you have a more evolved and humane mindset, and focus on extricating yourself from the situation. You're sure to be able to find something more worthwhile, if you: keep your integrity intact, put creeps and their games in your rearview, and just keep moving forward with confidence.
If there is a team of friends/family that don’t do work or get promotions unfairly and you report it “anonymously”, the whole clique will know who reported it. I have seen it happen. Not sure if it’s true but on other forums employees have said it’s easier to fire an IC than a manager/Director. Maybe HR can confirm this rumor.
Even if HR does not help and you get laid off or fired, it doesn’t matter. If it is reported, it is on file whether founded or unfounded and yes you have a retaliation lawsuit !!! Do not be afraid !!! Go for it !!!
@ah report this to the anonymous hotline. Saw that happen first hand and the internal investigations team rooted it out quickly and terminated all of them for not reporting those family connections on their Conflict of Interest forms in Archer
@ae Hire an employment (specific) attorney and let them guide you. You may still have to follow the reporting things structure but an attorney will best give you tips how to document things (legally) in a way that will set the attorney up for success in obtaining you favorable results.
Wow, I’m in the exact same predicament!!!! I reported the senior manager too. I’ve had good performance and good reviews, and I’ve survived every layoff we’ve had. Meanwhile, we have a temp who has been here for SIX years and still doesn’t know how to do the job. 😩
Our manager has a clique, and there are family members on the exact same team. The manager has actually told everyone that they’re family, and one family member is constantly all over the other family member’s work. It’s just very uncomfortable because it creates a clear perception of favoritism and makes you question how fair things really are. 😩
NEVER report inappropriate behavior, bullying, or any other activity. HR is there to protect the company. Most likely everyone already knows who these people are, but as soon as you call it out, there will be retaliation no matter the no retaliation policy.
@a8 Initially, I felt as though that sounded pretty cold. But then I recalled just how cold and unsympathetic many of our direct leaders have dealt with us.
So, in light of that, exacting retribution for bad and unfair treatment makes total logical sense.
Sometimes, for people to learn, they have to be conditioned that actions have consequences, even actions against underlings. How else will those leaders learn and recalibrate behavior?
Next, I think we need to figure out a way to hep HR to learn and recalibrate. I think maybe they also could use some conditioning.
@a6 If you report a bad manager and then are let go out of retaliation, then follow that Manager’s career and don’t hesitate to drop anonymous chatter about their character. If they ruin your career, then don’t feel guilty nor hesitant to ruin theirs.
Yo people you have to understand, HR works for the corporation and not the employee. Do not ever report your manager, you will be let go for sure. Instead, change the team or the job
@OP nope how it happens. I reported a team lead that our manager loves and now I’m sc--wed. The lead is safe still bullying others that won’t report now cuz they don’t want to be let go off.
@a2 Did you have to go through the EEOC as well?
@OP I meant to say you're not wrong to find it suspicious. Sorry. Haven't had coffee yet.
@OP Not suspicious at all. Sounds like retaliation. My PL is known to retaliate against us as well. I would consult a labor attorney who only takes payment out of settlement when they win. Wrongful termination based on retaliation. I successfully sued a former employer for exactly the same thing. And was successful. Good luck & hope it works in your favor!!
@OP No surprise ot coincidence. If you step out of line, you risk the chopping block. Saw this at every level for directors and teammates.
