@OP some say managers are gone some say now IC. If the company wants to truly cut costs this is the place! Managers Directors etc participate in a bunch of meetings travel on company dime and are just an overhead. Will be interesting to see where the axe falls in this area.

People managers remain, but report to vice presidents. Directors on the block.

Manager role is to help understand which folks are contributing the best, the ones that have gaps but can be trained or directed in a particular direction and are showing constant improvement, the ones that need to be let go. development plans, reviews, merit adjustments, bonus, etc so when it gets into a 30 person team, All those things are essentially impossible. So the team members basically become Lord of the flies trying to survive, steal recognition or do nothing at all... which they can easily now that the manager has no idea what they're working on, who has time for 1x1s.. not everybody can act as an independent rugged entrepreneur, some resources are fantastic with tremendous talent but must be 'managed'. sad state of affairs, loved the company as it was 10 years ago.

Honestly I see little added value from my manager. He basically is there to communicate all the BS which he gets from his managers to us. And tries to enforce it. At best he admits himself that the new policy is BS but does little to nothing to push back on it or suggest any other options. Feedback we give him is hardly ever passed on to the higher ups.

So just get rid of such managers. Just an unnecessary middleman

Managers were useless. Changing them into IC even more useless and horrible. They can only schedule meetings and find some minor mistakes on process when engineers do really work

It sounds like whoever is a "manager" will get 30 subordinates. Some areas already have that.

@br all managers are too busy to be managers. They are busy, trying to figure out what they can do to keep their job.
