Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

I feel bad for new employees

All they'll ever know is the mess Nike is right now. None of them will know the amazing company we joined decades ago that was on top of the list for so many people. With great pay, great benefits, amazing products, and making us feel proud to be part of it all. I miss those days.

@ej

Nike’s monthly insurance premium is the highest I’ve paid at any of the companies I’ve worked for. Perhaps it’s different for someone without dependents.

Fu-k Nike. At this point, I hope the whole bureaucratic circus collapses under the weight of its own bullsh-t.

A company that never stops talking about empowerment, innovation, and caring for employees somehow manages to create a culture where spending $500 on a piece of equipment or software can require approval from your manager, who asks their director, who asks the Senior Director, who asks the VP.

Nothing says “move fast and innovate” quite like needing the corporate equivalent of a papal conclave to buy a fu--ing software license.

So who is actually empowered to make decisions there? Apparently nobody.

The leadership culture has become a parody of itself: endless layers, endless meetings, endless approvals, endless corporate slogans about trust and agility while everyone is terrified to make a decision without getting permission from three levels above them.

But sure, keep putting “innovation” on the PowerPoints. That should fix it.

@eg my wife has worked for two other employers, both in the S&P 500, neither beat Nike in terms of costs and benefits. This doesn’t mean we’re top notch, but higher than average. There are other companies out there that definitely beat us.

@c4 overpay? Really. If you are comparing to McDonalds’s sure.

“ at least health benefits are good”

FYI, I pay a fraction of the monthly health insurance premium at my new employer and my new insurance covers more out of pocket.

@c4 You got paid right? You joined all your useless meetings. Probably used several dozen tools tech manages or created without even thinking about it. Tech has it's problems, but it's not just something that if it ceased to exist Nike would be able to function even for a few hours. Sure, yes it's bloated with teams working on low value add things, but way more business teams are the same way. Nike is running on momentum and most of the business strategy we are seeing when it works is just burning the energy from that momentum to look successful, but slowing it down a tiny bit at a time.

@c4 what a brilliant thought, lets see. Maybe maintain one of the largest supply chains in the world, connect every single product to marketplace, support every transaction Nike makes, all of the tools that allow anything to work internally and externally... you know, pretty much facilitate the business functioning in every important sense

You might not like the things gt is asked to work on and you can blame our schizophrenic business partners for that and the milquetoast tech "leaders" who enable it. Make no mistake, as tech ceases to work correctly so will proportionally the rest of Nike, if we aren't already there

What has GT done over the last 6 years?! Serious question. What have they done other than over hire and over pay. Can anyone share what good has come out of the tech org since Covid?!

I've been here 15 years. I remember when tech was actually respected as an organization and we actually outputted things of value. Now it all seems like the work is to support the ego of our bosses and their empire building. We also didn't have yearly half-assed reorgs back then. This is the worst state i've seen GT in.

@a4 I saw the once great company 25 years ago and left because of toxic leadership who discriminated & retaliated against me for speaking up. I remember 25 years ago, as a leader part of my success was determined by the success of my team. Part of my job was encouraging and supporting their growth and development. Leaders wanted their direct reports to succeed. Now everyone is out for themselves. There are cliques and VPs that think they are untouchable. The Frat Boys are back but they have Sorority Sisters now. The company will never be the same. We have burnt every bridge. Internally and externally.

I can attest. I am a new employee that just started at the beginning of summer. Recruiter and Hiring manager was saying how exciting it is to be part of GT now and all the cool stuff i'll be working on. My experience has been the opposite... a messy org let my sh---y leadership and low morale amongst everyone i've met.

Great pay and at least health benefits are good, now the overall culture and sense of belonging is extremely far from the past. Essentially most people I work with are constantly afraid of losing their jobs.

At this point, we all have an invisible number above our head until our name gets called. Never use to be like this but has been since 2020.

I feel worse for current long-term employees (the few remaining) who have seen what the once great company has become today.
