Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Who's still standing?

It feels like most of the people who could get out have gotten out. The ones still here are either too scared, too stuck, or still looking. I admit, I'm in the first group. Anybody still here because they genuinely want to be?

I left. There was no way I was going to be moved to DFW on my dime to work for a company that would just find some new way to make me leave.

I have 2 small bits of advise.

  1. Complete training. Train in security, AI, general IT, Project Management, Agile... Anything that will allow you to speak to the topics. Bonus if you can figure out a way to use the training in your current role.

  2. Check your actual worth. This is the most important. I know a lot of people thing "AT&T Pay Stinks". I disagree. I can tell you that our compensation vs. work responsibilities is way out of whack. Trust me, AT&T is an anomaly. Its understood by many employers that ATT pays well for lazy employees. If you want out, set your sites to a realistic number. As for me, I set my minimum at a number well below the pay range ATT set for my previous role. I know they can look up pay ranges just as well. Not everyone leaves a company for more money. We work(ed) for a lousy company with an 88% debt to net worth ratio. We pay people with GED's or poli-sci degrees high 6 figures to essentially watch paint dry.

If you want out, stop thinking about money and start thinking about what you want your life to be. Don't be that guy who gets a raise and suddenly thinks he's a frickin' Kardashian! Or, do be that guy an get used to living paycheck to paycheck, hoping AT&T doesn't give you a surplus or FTW letter.

The only ones who love their job are the ones with no real responsibilities or demanding schedule. Some of us are being crushed like cockroaches and feel stuck for the paycheck.

Posted in another thread, but the comments prove this true.
Once that market shifts, and it is starting to, anyone not on a pension with any skills is going to head for the exit. Just about everyone I started with 10 years ago has left the business. I suspect in 3 years at most, more than 1/2 of the remaining employees will be gone due to retirements or other offers. Stanks is correct on the demographics, they are going to have a massive talent crisis in the next 3 years or less if they don’t do something now to start bringing in new blood(not just straight out if school TDPs that don’t stay anyways), training them, and retaining the younger (under 50) people they have.

“ Am I resentful that my friends were laidoff and fired?“

They weren’t your friends. Stop with the friends, and worse “family” nonsense. Everyone is out for themselves. Your “team” is no different.

@bc

Good luck to you, honestly. They got me in May, though I was hoping to get at least 2 more years.

Most people stay because they have bills to pay, children to raise, feed and educate, and other responsibilities that come with adulthood.
It helps to learn early in life to figure out how to maximize the best parts of life and minimize the stuff that are mere irritants.
You only get one life, if the job is the most important thing and it's causing you unhappiness, you shouldn't waste another day working here. Seriously.

Were things better? Yes. Am I resentful that my friends were laidoff and fired? Yes. But overall, I enjoy my work, I like my coworkers and I don't live far from the office.

I am virtual working one other full time job that pays as much. Why would I leave?

Most of the people who work here will not be standing (unassisted) much longer. It’s like a retirement home. All the sub 40s are sprinting for the exits to avoid the RTO disaster and toxic culture.

I and many others are simply looking for 3-5 more years. We’ll put up with the BS that long rather than start over elsewhere.

The people they should be worried about are the under 40-50s they need to run the business into the future. They’re the ones who are actually leaving and will continue to leave as long as the RTO policy remains. By that point I’ll be retired so I don’t care

Still here. Looking for two years then retiring. Why would I start over elsewhere?

Still here. Still virtual. If that changes then I’m gone.

Same.
Here because I’m virtual - when I’m not virtual I’m gone.
Company is a disaster but if I can stay full remote and pull $200k then I’ll wait it out.

Who knows, maybe they will get rid of Stankey and things will turn around.

don’t be ashamed to admit you’re staying for the check. airs hard to find the same salary - possible but difficult. Sadly there’s tons of people in Atlanta making well over 6 digits as level 2 that are unqualified but Stank and EVPS don’t know and don’t care. As long as VPs meet their reduction number every downsize. No one knows the business enough to see what people are doing and really aren’t doing i.e., getting paid for no value. It’s all about who L3s and L4 like.

Hang in there 1 collect check and keep searching on their job for a better opportunity. Be honest with prospective employers that the constant downsize and environment is not healthy. they know already … Good Luck!

@az aren’t you asked to move yet? That is surprising unless you are not in ATS.

Well I stayed around cause they kept paying me and keep peppering me with these little on the spot bonuses. I see tons of others that have no incentive to work sitting in their cubicles watching TikTok and taking naps and I’m still busting my a-s to make it to every meeting and contribute. I want out but too rural to find a comparable job with this many holidays, fully vested and pay in my location. Would take a full life restart. Was hoping I’d get fired but that doesn’t seem likely now. Just keeping my eyes and ears open. In 20 years time I might qualify for a promotion who knows.
