Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Hi Managers, please also reward working bees who actually got job done

There are more than 20 of us working together on a major project. Many of us are either away on business trips at the weekends conducting client testing or staying overnight at the factory for trial runs. The project manager has been promoted twice in the space of three years, whilst many other staff members have not even received a 3 per cent pay rise.

@258 Suuurrre, whatever you say, "senior manager." Pics or it didn't happen.

@24p senior manager here...

I used to call my team out by name for great work -- I wanted to get them the visibility they deserved and help them in their career journey.

I was told by my boss -- in no uncertain terms -- that I should never mention the underlings because senior leadership doesn't know who they are and it undermines my accomplishments as a people manager.

This place is toxic as he-l.

Hard lesson learned - if you are not in the boardroom to present the results to leadership, you don't matter. Your manager is 100% taking all the credit, I guarentee you are grouped into their slides as 'the team.'

Don't do overtime for this company. I can tell you from my own experience, it is 100% not worth it. I have been on international calls where some presented slides (that I created) for a project that I ran and they took credit for. Wild stuff at mmm, it is toxic on sooo many levels and in so many ways.

Every few years companies like this have a big idea. Right now, it is The Journey to Zero. All you have to do is check the right boxes, have lots of meaningless meetings, tell people "We need a little more out of you to get to our goal".
It cycles thru and then there is the next Big Thing.

The next Big Thing should be Leadership. There is no leadership here, none, Zero (0).
It's all what can I get out of these people to move up. Ticket punchers who do things as cheap as possible to get their bonus and move on. Leaving in their wake used and abused employees who are the Heart of this place. The ones who actually do the work, have the knowledge and experience and dedication to getting things done. That look out for each other because no management does.
True leaders lead. They mentor. They help people and the company do better as a whole. Not for personal gain.
Good luck out there, people!

@bd fun fact: the actual reason safety glasses are so critical in the lab is that a manager may need to use your face as a ladder to reach their next JG.

@m1 I would love to, but as the directors are making my life miserable with their incompetent decisions and various efforts to cut costs, it still affects me.

And then I need to explain to my boss (a director) why it's taking so long to implement the magical, reality-denying money machine that they've demanded.

3M calls this "leadership".

Judging from the threads, it seems like there is a great divide between the JG16+ and the other regular workers. While the company rewards the elites with generous stocks options, the leadership should probably address the unfairness and unhappiness amongst the workers who are actually doing the job. Morale is at stake.

In a recent cost savings workshop that involves the factory, only 2 directors are pushing hard for the improvement. The rest of the participants are just following along. I guess only the directors are motivated as their compensation are tied to stock price. Let them drive it.

Look, if we start rewarding the people who understand the job and actually do the work, what will become of the poor senior managers, directors, and VPs who DON'T understand and CAN'T do anything?

Did you even stop to think about how that would make them feel?

Don't be so selfish!

The d-mbest words my ears hear come from 3M managers.

I have seen this happen many times throughout my career at 3M. Sometimes it is the team leader, other times it is a lazy team member. They attend meetings, learn what was done, "borrow" prototypes, then while everyone else is busy working the credit taker runs to the manager/director, shows him the prototype and team results and claims he did it all. The boss believes the lies since those lies are typically accompanied by showers of praise for the egotistic boss, and viola, the credit stealer gets the promotion and the worker bees get nothing.
