Thread regarding Canon Inc. layoffs

Management doesn't value competence or good workers

The C-suite/upper management obviously hasn't cared about their employees for many years. One would think they should care, at least a little bit, about work actually getting done so their departments can be profitable.

Nope, those parasites only care about their own image, personal petty grievances, and control over their employees. They are more than happy to fire the best people rather than own up to the problems they created. I guess in their cynical minds it's better to quell any resistance and come out on top, even if just for one quarter before their pathetic decisions catch up to them.

There's no point in loyalty to this company. They don't plan on returning it. Work your shift, have your coworkers back, and don't give Canon a moment extra of your time or effort.

Are you reading this, Sammy Sun or are you too busy making a complete fool of yourself, trying to do a first baseball pitch?

@ar You were correct. There was no elaborate ice cream sundae bar. This company ALWAYS cheapens out and never provides quality experiences for employees. Annoying, but predictable. When they can’t provide the “Wow factor” for its workers, how can you expect them to do that for their customers?

@zq if the person were incompetent, they would have been promoted to CEO, not fired and thrown under the bus. "Canon's Razor" is crush the competent, spare the corrupt.

Guys, I promise you, Canon isn't firing competent people for d-mb reasons. Occam's razor...they just weren't good employees.

@qt it would royally pi-s off managers and their direct report supervisors to the point where it would have a ripple effect. There's nothing they can do not would they have any legal standing. It would be considered retaliation and an army of employment lawyers would put HR in an uncomfortable position.

Best way to do it is take any sick days or a personal day if you have any remaining. You have accrued it. Might as well use it as one sees fit. It would be clever but it would draw unwanted attention to management. And of course the paid corporate bots that have been sprinkling pro-Canon management taunts. Yeah, they should sit on a cactus 🌵.

@qh That's clever! I feel like management would start rejecting PTO if it was just one team doing that, but that's hard for them to sort out across multiple teams.

Plus, there are some smaller teams where one person taking a few inconveniently timed sick days would bring everything to a standstill before management even thinks to reject anything.

@pt Greaaat. Last week they fire someone competent and, let me guess, this week will be poorly planned RIFs.

I have a fun story that seems topical. At a previous job, my coworkers and I got so tired of the bad leadership, mistreatment, and operating with the max staffing of a skeleton crew that we decided to take strategically timed PTO. We would carefully rotate who was taking PTO so that multiple departments were chronically understaffed. We didn't work extra hours or on weekends. We just let stuff break. And then we let leadership know why nothing was getting done.

They couldn't do anything about it. We were doing our work well when we weren't on PTO. And the PTO was already accrued and we always made sure to give more than proper notice when we requested it.

After a month, they removed one of the C-Suite people from their directorship role over his department, rehired some coworkers they had just terminated, and opened up jobs for part-time and float staff. Coincidentally, we also got a cost of living increase, which was much more than the standard merit increase, later that year.

@et Some folks in here have to be talking about someone in Pricing getting axed. Good worker, been here for years, well liked.

Shortsighted management can always be counted on to lower morale and decrease efficiency at every opportunity. I'll have a great laugh if they have to rehire once management is forced to concede that they don't actually do that much work themselves so they can't cover the workloads of the people they think are so expendable. It wouldn't be the first time.

@dh Canon sure bungled the heck out of that. I honestly don't know what management was thinking.

Wonder what would happen if we circulated a petition. We all know Canon doesn't have our back, least we can do is look out for eachother.

@an With the utter contempt management has displayed this week, they don't even deserve the bare minimum. They can do their bare minimum first, then I'll return the sentiment.

@dw I’m offering to take all Canon Executives out to a five-star restaurant, and pay out of my pocket, but here’s the kicker..the only tool in the kitchen will be a child’s Easy Bake Oven unit. Let’s see how many take me up on this offer. Maybe then, just maybe, it will get through their thick skulls that Google is garbage and not a serious and suitable tool for the workplace setting.

@an If this has something to do with Pricing, I wholeheartedly agree. If it doesn't, well I still wholeheartedly agree because management is in the habit of acting with cowardice and cruelty.

Every time there's a missed deadline, a slowdown, or error...I'll make sure everyone involved knows the names of the ghouls who caused it and the names of the good workers who would have prevented it if they were still here.

Give rogue management the cold shoulder, have minimal contact or interaction, and keep it completely transactional. And document what they are saying and doing.

@an I already have one foot out the door and I have half a mind to just leave and make damn sure the already anticipated incoming bottlenecks and delays are that much worse.

At some point, management will have a well earned reckoning.

Hey now, easy there tough guy. Your loyalty is being rewarded with……wait for it……..an ice cream social! (well at least for the Burlingtonians)

If you’re in Burlington, make sure to pick up your “ice cream ticket” in the HR office. Yes, they must police it to ensure nobody attends on Wednesday & Thursday. We’re looking at you, CFS (cough ,cough), because nobody from CUSA is coming into the office an extra day just for some rinky di-k portion size “treat”. This illustrates how much they don’t trust employees. It’s gotten so bad that they need to nickel and dime popsicle and ice cream sandwich expenses. They got too much time on their hands if they are going to seriously track the distribution and redemption of ice cream tickets in real time, but hey I guess they finally found a good use for Google Sheets.

@ac Yea if Canon expects an ounce more than the bare minimum or any loyalty from me, they can show theirs first by wrangling in their rogue management and rehiring my coworkers that they unceremoniously fired.

Nobody wants to keep working under constant threat all while having to witness good people have their work slandered and their livelihoods wrecked.

This company is definitely run by sociopaths. Even middle management is riddled with evil. Obsession with numbers and spreadsheets, create false narratives about employees, and shift the goal posts to make life as miserable as possible. You're right about the last point. Do the bare minimum and no more. This company doesn't care about extra effort. They are cruel narcissistic pieces of s...t
