Cobra costs

I know severance package details contain contact information but foreseeing being part of future WFR so curious what the cost is for PPO Cobra for employee/children or just employee? If you know please share.

@kz those negative changes were not in the Democrat’s bill. The GOP added the restrictions on pre-existing and to increase the costs.

I was let go April 10th from Round Rock along with a lot of others. Cobra cost for the UHC PPO, dental, vision, and mental health for a family of 4 was 2850 per month. First 2 months free.

An easy way to figure out your costs is look at your last tax info. On the Dell W2 or a separate card it lists what Dell paid for your insurance for the year. Take that number and add it to what you were paying per paycheck x 26 pay periods. I came up with something around 32-33k for the year.

I did look into Obamacare plans. The cost for silver plan in TX without dental or vision or mental health was 34K per year. It would have been cheaper for me to stay on Cobra than switch to Obamacare and the Dell Cobra was a better plan that included dental, vision, and mental health.

There was a cheaper option than Obamacare. Buy healthcare in 3-4 month blocks. Each block was similar but just different enough to keep it from being continuous care. The deductibles reset with each block. Pre-existing conditions were not covered for the first 2 blocks. Example...Meds like BP and Cholesterol etc were not covered until after the first 2 blocks. This plan was considerably cheaper than Obamacare even with the restrictions. The big healthcare companies have these plans you just have to ask about them.

Whatever Obamacare did when it passed sure made the health choices less and more expensive.

Hope this helps those who are planning for next set of big cuts that are coming.

@k7 With Obamacare you have to estimate your income for that year. Things came up, tapped some of 401K, which pushed me over my estimated income. Had to pay additional $600 to IRS due to going over estimated income. That's another Obamacare feature.

They are asking about Cobra. As to Obamacare, I had affordable insurance before Obamacare came about. Obamacare is based on your income. Had to put wife on it for 6 months till she turned 65. It cost a lot, high deductible.

The Cobra rates are different depending on which state you are at and which insurance you pick. In MA, the Cobra for Atena PPO for a couple is $1956.88 (health+dental+VSP) which is roughly 5 times of what I paid as an Dell employee. ACA rate in MA is likely close to $3K/mo if your income exceeds $86K.

@OP I was let go May 2025 and COBRA was about $890 a month. I think it jumped to about $925 for 2026. Thankfully I was 65 in January and got medicare.

For you only it’s a little over $800 a month. Complete coverage like you had. Health, vision, dental, etc.
