Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

No Plan. No Direction. Just Goodbye.

This being our last week makes everything feel a little more real. What makes it even harder is that there really doesn’t seem to be a transition or exit plan. No one has spoken to me about who will be taking over the work I’ve been responsible for, and from what I can see, even the people who are staying haven’t been given much direction on what happens next or who will be responsible for what. After 15 years, I guess I just expected the ending to feel a little different.

To the OGs of Centene — thank you for the 15 years. This place was so much more than just a job to me. For so many years, it felt like family. I grew here, learned here, made memories here, and gave a huge part of my life to this company.

To those who are staying — please be careful and keep looking outside the company, too. From everything we’ve been seeing, more and more roles and responsibilities are being moved toward outsourcing, and I think it’s important to keep your options open. Maybe that’s also why we’ve seen so many leaders taking their PTO lately. Who knows.

I don’t know where my path will lead from here, and truthfully, that uncertainty is scary. But I’m grateful for everything this company taught me and for all the people who were part of the journey.

It’s genuinely sad to watch something that once felt so strong and meaningful slowly sink to the bottom of the ocean. I never imagined I’d be watching it happen from the inside.

The Plan:
When a company rolls out a multi-million dollar AI automation contract alongside a Voluntary Separation Program (VSP) and sudden involuntary layoffs, it is clear that automation is being leveraged to reduce long-term headcount. Corporate PR framing terms like "enterprise optimization" and "leading the future of healthcare" obscure the direct reality.

The primary business drivers forcing Centene's hand involve major membership and revenue losses:
• Massive Enrollment Drops: Centene lost 6% of its overall plan membership. The hardest hit came from a steep 36% drop in its Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace business after expanded federal premium subsidies expired.
• Medicaid Revenue Pressures: As the nation's largest Medicaid provider, Centene is managing major funding cuts and shrinking rolls as states aggressively redetermine eligibility.

The Direction:
Faced with billions in shrinking revenue, Centene's immediate solution is aggressive cost-cutting. Their approach handles the workforce transition through a specific sequence:
• Phase 1: The VSP Buyouts (June 2026): Centene offered a voluntary buyout program to a majority of its 61,000-person workforce. [1]
• Phase 2: Forced Layoffs (August 2026): Because voluntary acceptances were not enough to hit their target, Centene moved immediately into involuntary layoffs. Estimates suggest the total reduction could shrink their workforce by up to 12.5%.

The AI Connection: The Cognizant Agentic AI implementation acts as a structural defense mechanism. By automating high-volume administrative tasks, claims processing, and billing, Centene is attempting to ensure that when departments lose the majority of their personnel, automated systems absorb the processing workload so the company does not fall behind on claims adjudication.

@OP Very well said! I'm also an OG Centene employee of 10 years and this is my last week too. I constandtly think that MIchael Neidorff is turning in his grave at what's become of his company and life's work. This place has become a joke, a sad joke. Good luck in your journey! Onward and upward!

What they never told you after all these years: It's a big club, and you are not in it. You never really were in “The Family” The Plan: Agentic A.I. Centene will be the "frontier" of the post-labor economy. The Direction: Automate all work without telling the workforce. When that is online or close to it, offer VSP then follow up with involuntary separation.

@OP I guess it’s common within Centene Management, your PL is there to lead but have NO direction! 😂

I thought there was an entire team working with Mission Simplify that was handling the transition; documenting responsibilities, processes, resources.. I just had a co worker reach out to me with a spreadsheet they put together themselves, proving me wrong. This is the only communication I had on my team related to their transition. Seriously, zero direction.

@OP Good luck and much success. I’m in the next round in Dec. 2026 to voluntarily leave.

@OP Fellow OG of 13 years and will be separating in 2027. Your message hits home. Like you, I was so proud to be part of Centene. Those feelings no longer exist. Sad for all. I wish you all the very best!
