I haven't seen anyone cite the Federal WARN Act in their posts or responses; with this being a layoff of more than 50 people, would the WARN Act not apply in this situation? If so, they would need to provide 60 days notice, or at least the equivalent in pay/severance. At least that's what I thought. Is my understanding incorrect?

@OP I believe the people laid off this week will have enough notice time and severance pay combined to cover the 60 day criteria.
Whether the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act applies to remote workers during a reduction in force (RIF) depends on how their "single site of employment" is tied to a physical office. If a remote worker is linked to an office they report to or receive assignments from, they may count toward WARN thresholds, though the law remains gray and heavily debated.
The federal WARN Act generally does not apply to employees who leave through a Voluntary Separation Program (VSP). Because these departures are voluntary, they are not classified as an "employment loss" or an involuntary layoff.

You won’t see a warn notice. This comes up constantly. Read the specific warn requirements. There are many, many loopholes. It’s not just 50 people. It also matters on the location and entity in a specific timeframe. The way the sprinkle the layoffs over time, business units and locations keeps them off the “warn” list.
DOL.gov says: WARN required : A mass layoff —where your employer lays off either
between 50 and 499 full-time workers at a single site of employment
and that number is 33% of the number of full-time workers at the single site of employ.
@OP I believe because they announced it back in June and with the VSP rollout they are counting that as “notice” now whether they filed any thing in June.. I do not know. I know a few of us looked into it once it was announced but nothing had been filed at that point
