Geos & Engineers and Upstreamers & Downstreamers

Alright, so want to really understand what salary curve differences exist between these groups.

How high Geos are vs. Engineers in the Upstream? Looking for CL examples.

What about Upstreamers vs. Downstreamers? How high is Upstream? Again give CL level examples.

Trolls, just listen or add your valuable commentary to the other posts.

Company laid off the engineers and now forcing techs doing the zero pen.

Company laid off a bunch of engineers , and now is forcing techs to do the zero pen jobs that fell to them. The union is so stupid , they didn’t even argue for a differential pay for its members. Company is saving millions making techs do the engineering work now. What does the union do besides sc--w over its members at every turn lol

ISG Engineering's Agile Development Process

Step 1: Someone in Sales says, “The customer needs this.”

Step 2: Engineering says, “That's not on the roadmap.”

Step 3: Salea says, “$2 Million dollars is riding on this feature.”

Step 4: Exec Management says, "Drop what you're doing and make it happen."

Step 5: Engineering creates a Jira ticket.

Step 6: Ticket remains untouched for 12 months.

Step 7: Customer escalates.

Step 8: Ticket becomes P0 Critical.

Step 9: Two engineers work on it for 3 days.

Step 10: Product is released.

Step 11: Everyone celebrates the “successful product launch.”

Step 12: Customer finds 14 new bugs and feature is 1/3rd complete.

Step 13: Repeat Steps 9 - 12.

Agile.

Architecture Theater

Every failed system in this organization has at least two architects attached to it.

Somehow, the more architects we add, the more legacy we create, the more bureaucracy we invent, and the slower engineering moves.

At this point, "Architect" feels less like a role and more like a witness to the crime.

AI vs BTC

Old colleagues who have left have told me they're developing AI agents at their new company that can assess inspection reports and output recommendations that are spot on in minutes. A small team of engineers doing the work that took our BTC months, without all the errors.
Anyone else hearing similar things?

How Entitled Corporate Karens Helped Ruin Nike

Let’s be clear: this is not a criticism of women broadly and certainly not of the many women of color at Nike who consistently kick a-s, deliver exceptional work, challenge broken systems, and make the company better.

This is about a specific corporate archetype: privileged, entitled "leaders" who we-ponize victimhood whenever their competence or conduct is questioned. They demand accountability from everyone beneath them while treating accountability for themselves as persecution.

They turned personal insecurity into “leadership,” favoritism into “talent strategy,” and organizational politics into a substitute for results. They promoted one another, protected mediocrity, punished candid dissent, and surrounded themselves with people unlikely to challenge them. Competence became threatening. PowerPoint replaced product.

Meanwhile, the people who genuinely understood athletes, footwear, design, engineering, and innovation were sidelined while professional meeting-attenders accumulated titles and congratulated themselves for “transforming” the company.

Now, after helping dismantle a culture built by generations of talented people, they will undoubtedly insist that none of it was their fault.

That may be their most enduring Nike innovation: failing upward while presenting themselves as the victims.

Quality Leadership?

It seems as though we have lost our way to deliver high customer satisfaction. The forward models are uninspired. Quality leaders seem seem to be happy with status quo. There needs to be a change in the Quality leadership so we can start engineering vehicles customers want and deliver high satisfaction. Is it time for a new Quality Czar?

AEST-Manufacturing Engineering Headcount Reduction

We’ve heard rumors of domestic onsite engineering headcount reductions in favor of offshoring work to the KLTC and BTC. Finally heard a real number; a 40% to 50% reduction in onsite engineering at the manufacturing sites by ~2030. Already importing folks from KL and BTC to fill key business team rolls onsite. Soon XOM will be run from Malaysia and India. Prepare your resumes.

ISG deserves to be laid off

It hurts to say it, especially since I service ISG, but ISG deserves to be shut down.

Engineering can never release anything competitive on time, product management doesn't know what a roadmap is, and neither understands enough about the market to know that we are literally 7-10 years behind the competition in virtually every category.

We had this coming a long time ago.

I'm excited to be a Developer Advocate at Teradata!

I'm excited to be a Developer Advocate at Teradata!

One of the most rewarding parts of this role is working with developers, engineers, architects, and data professionals to help them build great solutions and have a better experience with our platform.

I'd love to hear from everyone at Teradata: How can I make your experience better?

Whether it's documentation, tutorials, sample code, demos, videos, office hours, community events, or something else entirely, I'm listening. Your feedback will help me focus on the things that have the biggest impact.

Drop your thoughts in the comments or send me a message. I'm looking forward to learning from you and helping make our developer experience even better.

Qualcomm GPU team legacy hirings

Looks like the Qualcomm GPU team operates on family ties. While most people need a relevant Master's degree to get hired, I just get to know that some junior engineers with an unrelated Bachelor's was brought on a few years ago—and legacy hiring like that makes it feel like a family business

Innovation Theater

Innovation doesn’t die because people run out of ideas.

It dies when meetings replace making.

When every experiment needs five approvals.

When PowerPoint or Keynote become more valuable than prototypes.

When politics outrank curiosity.

When protecting careers matters more than questioning assumptions.

When “alignment” becomes code for “don’t rock the boat.”

The irony is that the companies famous for disrupting industries often become experts at preserving the status quo.

You can hire the world’s best designers, engineers, and creatives, but if they’re rewarded for managing risk instead of creating value, don’t be surprised when innovation turns into theater.

Real innovation is messy. It creates tension. It challenges leaders. It makes some people uncomfortable.

If everyone in the room agrees, you’re probably not innovating—you’re just documenting consensus.

The biggest threat to innovation isn’t a lack of talent.

It’s bureaucracy wearing an innovation badge.

Ford has become a monument to bureaucracy

The company is so top-heavy that management layers seem to outnumber the people doing actual engineering. Many of the best engineers—the ones who lived and breathed problem-solving—have long since left. What remains is an army of title-holders more interested in PowerPoint presentations, meetings, and career advancement than engineering.

The result is predictable: a growing shortage of genuine technical expertise and an organization that often struggles with problems that competent engineers should be able to solve routinely. Too many of today's so-called engineers couldn't design a simple cardboard box without forming a committee, scheduling a dozen meetings, and asking management for approval.

@j3+1kxyr77bx said it perfectly.

Verizon Hiring Engineers in Ireland?

Anyone else see the recently posted engineering positions in limerick Ireland? It looks like they are targeting fresh graduates. I have a few problems with this:

  1. Weren’t all international operations sold to BT?

  2. Why Ireland when our network is based in the United States?

  3. These would be good positions for associates looking to move into engineering. Why are they looking outside the company when people inside the company would want these jobs.

More confirmed silent layoffs

In addition to the rolling layoffs we've seen in marketing and sales I can confirm that additional layoffs have hit roles in project management and engineering. Naturally this will never be addressed, but it would be nice to know when this can be expected to subside. Extremely disappointing approach from leadership and such a departure from the transparency of the founders and subsequent leaders.

Thomson Reuters Cuts Engineering Staff Amid AI Push

Thomson Reuters is planning to reduce its workforce by up to 500 engineering positions. This move affects approximately 5.2% of its operations and technology unit employees. The company is increasing its use of artificial intelligence across its various business segments. A spokesperson stated that affected employees are being supported during this transition. Thomson Reuters also anticipates hiring over 250 net-new engineering roles globally in the next two years.

A Rant on the Dead Weight in Teradata's Engineering Ranks

I'm sick and tired of watching so many SWEs at Teradata coasting through their days like they're collecting a paycheck for breathing. You know who you are. You show up (barely), half-a-s a few tickets, spend more time in "syncs" and "brainstorms" than actually shipping code, and somehow think that's enough to justify your existence on the payroll. Newsflash: you're not bringing anything meaningful to the table.
The codebase doesn't improve itself. Features don't magically appear because you attended another standup or updated a Jira ticket with "in progress" for three weeks straight. Customers aren't impressed by your vague "explorations" or endless refactors that go nowhere. While the company is fighting in one of the toughest data analytics markets out there, you're dragging down velocity, inflating headcount, and forcing everyone else to pick up your slack.
If you're not consistently delivering high-impact work clean, production ready code that moves metrics, solves real problems, or accelerates our roadmap you're dead weight. Period. No more hiding behind "senior" titles or "architect" labels while contributing the output of a junior with a bad attitude. The bar is higher now, and a lot of you aren't clearing it. PIPs and layoffs aren't threats; at this point, they're overdue hygiene. Trim the fat, raise the average, and stop subsidizing mediocrity.
Meanwhile, shoutout to the ELT for actually having the guts to lead. Thank you for making the hard calls, for focusing on real execution over endless meetings and performative busyness, and for steering this ship through tough times instead of coddling underperformers. Your vision, accountability standards, and willingness to make changes are what keep Teradata competitive. Keep pushing. The company needs more of that energy at every level not the comfortable inertia that's been tolerated for far too long.
Time to ship or step aside. The rest of us are done carrying passengers.

Reservoir engineer

Just curious what people’s plans are. What do you think is the best exit route?
It seems that most people are just trying to get to JG3 and that’s basically the peak of their career at Shell unless they check the right box. I’m not sure if I want to climb that ladder for the sake of climbing. Not saying grass is greener on the other side, but just want to see what the options are.
