First, a federal judge in California blocked the State Department from laying off about 250 employees, many of them foreign service officers (FSOs).

Judge Susan Illston issued a temporary restraining order, saying the unions that filed suit were likely to prevail on their claim that the cuts violate federal law. The State Department originally announced the layoffs in July, but since FSOs are given a required 120 days’ notice, they were not let go during the shutdown. The State Department says the layoff protections only apply to notices that went out starting October 1, 2025.

I work in federal services and am wondering if anyone knows if the reopening of the government will restore a lot of the members we keep losing due to the shut down. It’s been awful hearing from members how this is impacting them and their family. Those have jobs aren’t getting paid and others are now losing their health coverage.

Here is what the government is saying “At a minimum, Mr. Bisignano appears to have failed to manage Fiserv effectively, and may have misled investors and the public about the company’s financial status, raising concerns about his ability to serve as a key Social Security and IRS official in the Trump administration,”

A bipartisan bill introduced on November 5, 2025, would require large companies and federal agencies to report AI-related layoffs to the Department of Labor.

Senators Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.) proposed the AI-Related Job Impacts Clarity Act. The DOL would collect this data and publish public reports for Congress.

Hawley says people need to understand how AI affects jobs, noting predictions that AI could increase unemployment by 20% in five years.

This follows other legislative efforts:

• Bernie Sanders warned AI could replace 97 million jobs in the next decade. He proposed solutions like a "robot tax," ending tax breaks for automation, and a 32-hour workweek.

• Nancy Mace introduced a bill for AI training in federal workplaces.

• Mark Kelly proposed an "AI Horizon Fund" where top AI companies would contribute to worker retraining and support.

On October 23 2025, White House press secretary said the “H1B system has been spammed with fraud”. I take that to mean they know the H1B system is abused and misused and perhaps some corrective actions need to occur.

US Senator Bill Cassidy has fired off a pointed letter to Cisco over the firewall flaws that allegedly let hackers breach "at least one federal agency."

Cassidy's letter [PDF] to Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins demands clarity around the company's knowledge of and response to the critical flaws – namely CVE-2025-20333 and CVE-2025-20362 – that prompted the US government to issue an emergency patching directive for federal civilian agencies.

Kansas City’s transit agency is facing a budget shortfall. City council members have already approved about 78 million dollars for KCATA and are considering an additional 46 million dollars to keep operations funded through October. In return, they want significant operational changes from the agency.

The proposal would cut routes and reduce service, include staffing reductions, and explore a fare program that charges riders who can afford to pay. The council is expected to vote on the ordinance next week. The aim is to stabilize finances while reshaping service levels, but the tradeoff could be fewer buses and drivers across the city.

Oakland faces a projected 129 million dollar one year budget shortfall and is pivoting to a back to basics approach. City leaders say priorities remain community safety, housing security, essential services, and collecting owed revenues. At a budget hearing, staff outlined difficult choices needed to rein in spending and balance the books.

If approved Dec 17, phase one would cut a little over 204 million dollars. Measures include reductions to city staff and police overtime, postponing one police academy, browning out two fire stations, and transferring money into the general fund from other sources. Proposed shifts include about 6 million dollars from the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, about 15 million dollars from the Self Insurance Liability Fund, and nearly 10 million dollars from the Emergency Reserve fund that exceeds policy minimums.

IT unions are urging state and central governments to act after Tata Consultancy Services reported a Q2 FY26 net headcount reduction of 19,755 employees, with total staff falling to 5,93,314 from 6,13,069 in Q1 FY26. The unions say weak oversight has enabled companies to sidestep labor protections and call for immediate regulation to safeguard workers.
