Austin IT Consolidation Sparks Layoff Fears

The City of Austin is moving forward with a plan to centralize its technology department, known as One ATS. This initiative aims to save millions of dollars annually after a tax ballot measure failed. While city management states no layoffs are planned, they acknowledge costs will be reduced as people leave. A union representative expressed concerns about potential safety risks and the impact on public services. The consolidation is expected to affect tech employees across various city departments, including emergency services.

Rumored union EISP across the board now seems less likely

Hearing rumblings that while there maybe the usual EISP this year it may not be like some say.Its sounding more and more like it’s not going to be across the board for anyone everyone to take. Its sounding more like a limited one for associates. One reason seems to be some departments groups are so small already!!Another reason is they just have little interest in giving extra money away when they know most are on the short list already in years left. Some of it is also sounding like is union wise for good reason want to the company to declare too many surplus groups because there is not a lot of faith they will get as many takers with gatt rates and medical cost up leaving the door for forced adjustment and layoffs.

Contingency Planning

I know this subject isn't necessarily about layoffs, but it definitely affects morale. Here are my thoughts...

I came up through CellularOne, then AT&T Wireless, then Cingular, then AT&T again. When SBC came along in 2006, they brought along this thing called Contingency Planning. It was explained to me that in the event of a strike of the union labor force, regular desk jockeys would head to the field and repair and maintain the phone network. I was like, WTF? Many of the IT types don't even know how to operate a sc--wdriver. But that's right, they will train them (us) to do the job. So, off many of us went for training. (BTW, it was the only business travel I had in decades. At least I got some In-N-Out on the company dime.) We learned how to climb ladders and poles, and some necessary skills for the role. We then retreated back to our offices to quickly forget what we learned. The process would continue until the next contract expired.

Do they really expect that this contingent workforce would be effective in the field? How many millions of dollars are spent, and for what exactly? A threat to the union workers? And another thing when it comes to recruiting talent: How long into the interview do they mention that periodically they will need to train for contingent work and possibly be sent to fix phone lines? I'm guessing that most degreed professionals would balk at the notion.

Choate Facility Faces Staff Reductions

Employees, union leaders, and local officials gathered to protest planned layoffs and service cuts at the Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center. The state intends to eliminate approximately 250 jobs, a program for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and reduce mental health beds. These changes are part of a multi-year plan that has drawn significant opposition from those concerned about the impact on services and employment. Protesters emphasized the critical need for mental health services in the region, arguing against the state's rationale for the downsizing. The rally highlighted the deep community concern over the future of the facility and its role in providing essential care.

Combination Technician in Southeast District 3

Currently CWA is in active negotiations with AT&T about the new combination technician title being created. The union can’t stop this , the title is coming. What’s being negotiated is the pay and shocker , the company wants to pay the title the same wage scale as all the titles it’s going to replace: WS32. This is a joke. They want the title to do all the dirty work of all other titles combined, which means a much larger skillset , and pay the same wage. The bigger plan though is to sc--w you all out of your severance or “surplus” pay. See , once this title exists , they can and will declare “technological surpluses “ of all the other titles and offer you a position as a combo tech. If you decline , you’re effectively quitting and not eligible to receive a single dollar of surplus or severance pay. How much you want to bet the union allows both the title to be ws32 AND have no protections from the subsequent surplus. This union is weak and will immediately roll over and show its belly.

Alfonso asking switches for "Daily responsibilities"

Alfonso is now asking multiple switches he's overseeing to send in "Daily tasks/responsibilities"
This screams "what can we get contractors to do"
This is also why the switches in the Northeast still have not received their contracts for the Union. Moving into VZB is not guaranteed for all employees anymore
Good luck in the next layoff

Centrica is reducing its workforce by 1,300 employees over two years as part of a digital transformation. The company attributes these cuts primarily to a shift in customer behavior towards digital channels, not AI. While unions express concern about AI replacing jobs, Centrica's CEO states that changing customer preferences are the main driver. The company plans to increase roles focused on digital services while scaling back phone-based positions. This announcement coincides with increased profits in Centrica's retail division.

Bethesda Faces Canadian Labor Lawsuit

A union representing Bethesda employees has filed a complaint alleging labor law violations in Montreal. Workers were reportedly promised employment through September during severance negotiations. However, termination letters were sent that week, offering only the minimum legal severance. This action follows broader layoffs at Xbox, impacting over 3,000 employees. Anyone Else Interested in Voting Out the Union?

What if Verizon rewarded performance instead of seniority? A non-union workplace could allow merit-based raises, faster promotions, and stronger one-on-one relationships between employees and management. High performers should have the opportunity to stand out and be recognized.

If unionized Verizon employees wanted to remove their union, there is a formal legal process under U.S. labor law. It isn’t something the company can simply decide, nor can a small group of employees do on their own.

In general, the process is:

  1. Employees file a decertification petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
  2. At least 30% of employees in the bargaining unit must support holding an election by signing a petition or authorization cards.
  3. The NLRB determines whether an election is appropriate. There are timing rules—for example, elections generally cannot be held during the term of a valid collective bargaining agreement except during a specific “window period” before the contract expires (subject to NLRB rules and exceptions).
  4. A secret-ballot election is held.
  5. If a majority of employees who vote choose “no union,” the union is decertified as the bargaining representative.

Use that like button to cast your vote.

Exploring on building a union at Dell

Has anyone in Dell's Sales organization thought about starting a union or organizing with other sales representatives?

A union helped many Amazon employees secure higher compensation and improved benefits. I'm curious if others have considered whether organizing could help address some of the issues sales employees are experiencing at Dell.

For too long, Dell has failed to treat its sales employees fairly. Many of us have gone months without receiving our full commission payouts due to issues with compensation systems. Bonus payments have been mishandled, base pay has been reduced to levels that many find unsustainable, and the list of concerns continues to grow. The company loves to share how well they are doing, but has endlessly demonstrated a lack of care for its sales representatives......

We deserve fair compensation and to be paid out correctly.Tell Dell surveys alone are not enough. It's time to build a union that advocates for employees' rights.

There is strength in numbers. I'm thinking of starting one, and I am curious if there's others that would be willing to support.

If former employees would like to help, they can help us with change petitions and obtaining national press.

Google Employees Seek Severance Protections

Thousands of Google employees have signed a petition demanding improved layoff protections. The Alphabet Workers Union is advocating for severance packages at least matching previous terms and the offer of voluntary buyouts before involuntary layoffs. They also seek the option of extended paid leave instead of lump-sum severance, particularly for visa holders. Additionally, the union opposes a quota-based performance rating system they believe unfairly impacts employees. These demands come amidst a significant increase in tech industry layoffs, with AI restructuring cited as a major driver.

Bloomington Surplus

25 union members who are collection reps just got the vtp (voluntary termination pay) to leave the company. This is up to 104 weeks pay depending on seniority. This is only the beginning. It is expected that more will be surplussed until all union workers in Leg T are gone. Luckily for them however, they get a generous package to move on, thanks to the union negotiated contract. The payout, including money and medical, dental and vision benefits is much better than the severance pay that low level managers get. Too bad for them. Sooner or later, we'll all be laid off.

**Use the thing they keep shoving at us**

Everyone's exhausted hearing the word AI. It's in every memo, every excuse for why headcount keeps shrinking. Fine. Let's actually use it, then. Not to write emails faster. To see the picture clearly.

We used it to pull profit numbers back to the year this company formed. Not a single loss year in over two decades.

We used it to compare executive pay against the exact years benefits got cut.

We used it to see that severance costs are often a fraction of what gets paid out in dividends in a matter of weeks.

We used it to understand who stock buybacks actually benefit, and it is not the person worried about their next paycheck.

We used it to recognize known corporate playbooks: titles structured to strip organizing rights, restructuring that lines up with headcount targets already decided.

We used it to confirm national union density has been eroding for seventy years, and we're living the tail end of it.

We used it to separate real savings from cost shifting, franchise conversions and rehire-at-a-lower-rate schemes that look like savings but are wage suppression with extra steps.

None of this required insider access. It's all public, buried under enough jargon that reading it feels like a second job.

So if they're going to hand us the tool and tell us to use it or get left behind, use it. Educate yourself on the company you actually work for. Don't take what they hand you in a rally with the claps and the p-m poms as the whole picture. Pull the numbers. Pull the board backgrounds. Pull the org chart changes. Do the research yourself, not because someone told you what to think, but because you finally can see it for yourself.

Once enough of us see the same picture, at the same time, the direction gets a lot less complicated.

So after the layoff Now I believe we get a Union EISP soon less they wait till September managers next rif

So assuming the Union Eisp will be announced soon .The summer manager riff Is over .So hopefully it’s an enhanced buyout to everyone who wants out .This is possible it could be after September riff scheduled.I just don’t understand how the management continues to operate as if the whole company is not just smoke & mirrors !!!As if the CEO actually cares about the direct reports doing the dirty work like a band of executioners!!Pretty sure the associates that are mostly union have been taking more abuse from the same managers who fear for their Jobs for years .Lets face it from gps tracking to time questioning .When most associates actually have done nothing wrong along with have given no abuse to the management.Pretty sure if I was management I would just track on thru my day as if I saw nothing .Crazy how some managers still go after associates inside and outside for no reason as if the corporation cares about them till the next riff.
