Beware iSeries employees - IT is secretly hiring contractors for a rewrite

I am one of the 400 remote workers who has been ordered to RTO. I'm looking for work and applied for a fully remote contractor position. To my surprise, they told me the client is O'Reilly. They are looking for outside contractors to document the iSeries software for another team to do a complete rewrite. We received assurances that the CIO is leaving the iSeries platform alone, but this discovery clearly contradicts that claim. This CIO is secretly scheming to eliminate the iSeries as soon as possible.

Here is the job description that is posted on LinkedIn:

Capstone IT is helping our client find a RPG Developer who will analyze legacy RPG applications in an IBM iSeries/AS400 environment, document how those systems work, and support planning for a future move to a Java-based architecture. This role is light on daily coding and heavier on discovery, documentation, workflow analysis, DB2 data review, and modernization support.

Top 4 Skills:

RPG III / RPG IV / ILE RPG
IBM iSeries / AS400
DB2
Legacy system analysis and documentation
Responsibilities:

Analyze RPG applications running on IBM iSeries/AS400.
Document application functionality, dependencies, workflows, and business processes.
Review DB2 data structures and data flows.
Support discovery and planning for migration to a Java-based platform.
Assist with limited RPG enhancements, troubleshooting, and production support.
Work with business analysts, architects, stakeholders, and modernization teams.
Qualifications:

Strong RPG development experience, including RPG III, RPG IV, or ILE RPG.
Hands-on IBM iSeries/AS400 experience.
Solid DB2 database knowledge.
Experience documenting legacy applications and business processes.
Ability to explain technical findings clearly.
Nice to have: retail or high-transaction industry experience.
Nice to have: system integration or data migration exposure.

MAC Services in St. Louis

What’s the latest on the MAC Services department in St. Louis? Is headcount growing or falling?

When I was a kid, my friends wanted to be race car drivers, astronauts, or doctors when they grew up. But I always wanted to be something like a Senior Specialist in MAC Services. Angling to get in on this department at some point, if it’s not too late, and hoping for some updates on reorgs, cuts, etc. Thanks for any info!

Contract Managers...or whatever your everchanging title is

How ya'll doing? Anyone still standing or did they entirely replace you with AI? How many roles are rolled into one now? First, it was Oracle ONLY hired law school graduates for these roles and there was a very structured (for good reason) process for O contracts with a checks and balances system.

Deal Managers who project managed large $$ value, complex deals, working with Deal Specialists who assisted with first-line draft of CPQ quotes and standard T&Cs, with SalesHelp and Deal Desk separately assisting Sales with building quotes, structuring deals, and creating DAS approvals--all with different groups for the different LOBs. Then they cut numbers and had folks do ALL LOBs.

Then they collapsed DM/DSs into one role. Then they rolled in SalesHelp and Deal Desk into that role. So, essentially four roles got rolled into one. With increasingly reduced headcount, lots of turnover, NO pay raise, incentive, or even a "thank you"; rather, it was "be grateful you didn't get the axe yet". Not only did they not pay us more, they took away the source of the majority of why most of us stayed at O--overtime. They cut that. So, people went from doing one job and making significantly more money, to doing four jobs making less money. Hmm.

Not to mention management. I had five different managers in just over two years and not one of them did even a mediocre job "managing". They had NO idea how the ins and outs of contracts actually worked and could barely answer basic questions. In fact, they were always the ones coming to their reports to ask for explanations to give to their higher ups. I have no idea why some of those middle-management jobs were not cut.

But any who, if you need an idea of how severely underpaid you are, check out any other company hiring for a Deal Desk or Contract Manager position :)

Would you trade 1% if your base for a little more job security?

Pros
Fewer annual reorgs
More 3%+ merit (no 1-2%)

Cons
You'd have a handful of folks "advocating" for you that would have to be elected every 2-3 years
You'd give up 1% of your base annual salary

Thumbs up if you like it. Thumbs down if you don't

Are they getting rid of the Store Scanners?

Heard September 10 is when store leadership will be told and will break the news to their team members the next morning. Is this true? I was fearing this because of the strong push with ESL rollout. Store scanners are useless now.

Only asking because I’m not sure if I should be actively seeking out employment before everyone else does.

The Head of Operations is very excited to see 10,000 jobs move to USBank India

So on today’s call, he said there are 18:000 people in operations.
We have 10,000 contractors at the new USBank India , and the plan is to turn all 10 ,000 India contractors to USBank employees.

He said we need to view USBank as an asset and that he was very excited to see our assets building in India. We need to embrace and need excited about the 20,000 space new headquarter in India.

So in summary, he is very excited to see 10,000 US based employees OFFShored to India.

Are these people clueless? They see profit by cutting expenses and get excited and think we should be excited to see our job gone or our co worker losing their jobs to India?

Did I miss anything else on calll today? I only listened to the Q and A, which was very rushed, of course

Quarter Up Cuts Staff After Game Release

Game developer Quarter Up has reportedly made significant layoffs following the launch of its new title, Invincible VS. Estimates suggest that at least 75% of the company's workforce was affected by these job cuts. Former employees confirmed their departures, citing the weak commercial performance of the game as the likely reason. The studio appears to have retained only a minimal team to manage post-launch support and DLC. These reductions began in June and continued through July.

Salesforce Announces Further Job Reductions

Salesforce is implementing another round of layoffs, impacting 74 employees at its San Francisco headquarters. These permanent job cuts are scheduled to occur on October 5th. This marks the fourth set of Bay Area layoffs for the company in less than a year. These reductions align with a broader trend of significant job cuts across the tech industry in 2026. Many tech companies are citing the adoption of artificial intelligence as a reason for reducing their workforces.

San Francisco Jobs Rebound Amidst AI Growth

San Francisco's job market shows signs of recovery, with overall employment and tech sector jobs increasing. Mass layoffs, prevalent during the pandemic, have significantly decreased. The burgeoning AI industry is a key driver, attracting substantial venture capital and fueling local hiring. While older tech companies continue some reductions, AI firms are expanding their workforces. Experts predict continued job growth in the region due to the maturing AI sector.

This is not the First Round

I waited a while to post this. After seeing people posting about the VSP and Layoffs coming soon. First off, the layoffs started in Feb 2026. I know because I was one of the initial 137 Pluss laid off. I was with Centene for 7 years and was even noticed in a town hall for meeting Expectations that year and 3 months at a 100%. I was one of only three. (You are never Safe). In My Team huddle, our supervisor stated that layoffs were coming as they said that. get a meeting request for the next day with the team manager. In short, my job was impacted? and my last day was the end of the next pay cycle. Still took a month to get my severance payout. of a team of 14 people, Supervisor was let go, 1 lead was transferred the other lead was let go I the senor was let go and one other that was on leave was told when they return that would be their last day. Everyone else was sent back to WellCare. The funny part of it is the 4 people let go were all originally Centene employee's all with over 7 years of working for Centene. Who have all Bled for Centene. Your Employer does not care about loyalty, Commitment or your dedication to them. You might think you are gold plated, but you are still just a cog.
Centene has done it to themselves, anyone with a brain cell knew the current administration would not extend ACA. London and crowd could have looked at expanding into other health markets, even other insurance fields, but they want AI and H1B off shoring for quick income flow.
So that is my rant. Sorry for the rest of you out there facing this. The only good part I can sleep at night, and not as stressed out as I was (I have family that is helping out while I look for a new job)

Servance was 1 pay period for every year worked capped as 10 pay periods, any unused PTO, some training program that was a joke and Cobra (Bigger Joke)

Came here from databricks

Just left Databricks and jumped over to Teradata… and yeah, I’m already loving it.
Honestly? Excellent place to work. The people are solid, the vibe is good, and it just feels right. If you’re looking for somewhere that actually treats you well and lets you do interesting stuff, this is the place to be.
Glad I made the move.

Job Market Signals Slowdown

Recent economic data indicates a potential downturn in the U.S. job market. Employers eliminated 23,000 positions in July, and revised figures show an additional 103,000 jobs were lost in the preceding two months. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, or WARN Act, mandates that larger companies provide advance notice for significant staff reductions. This federal law requires 60 days' notice for mass layoffs or plant closings affecting a substantial portion of a company's workforce. Many states offer public access to these WARN notices, allowing individuals to check for potential upcoming layoffs.

Massive layoffs in IT

Brace yourselves for potentially massive layoffs. This is reportedly confirmed by a senior IT source. And, of course, AI will likely get the blame.

If you've been working after hours, you might want to consider spending some of that time looking for alternatives and preparing for what's next.

potential layoff only 5 months after joining

just a rant: kind of difficult to take in that we could potentially be laid off. A bit harder to take in especially since I joined 5 months ago as an early career new grad. Had to move across the country without relocation assistance only to be on the chopping block. wish they would rip the bandaid off already.

i know it's a stressful time for everyone given their own situations, I don't want to make it seem all about me! I hope the best for all of us! Welcome to the corporate world moment for me, lol

AI class action law suit

So I’m not very familiar with things like this. But curious as to if anyone has thought of maybe an ai class action lawsuit for taking our jobs or any jobs in general. Opinions or information on this. I just think if we don’t start standing up now to ai we are all going to be jobless at some point.

STCH

Does anyone know the real truth about stch site? How long will this site stay open? I’m a shell contractor and I have a family and I need this job but I hear that it’s going to stay open for a few more years . I don’t know if anyone is telling me the truth. Any help would be appreciated

Worker Finds New Path on Etsy After Layoffs

A former employee, Emily Cihacek, lost her job unexpectedly and experienced significant psychological stress. She has since turned to selling handmade Perler beads on Etsy to support herself. This shift reflects a broader trend of workers seeking alternative income streams through online marketplaces. While Etsy offers independence, it lacks the security of traditional employment. Experts caution that these platforms are not a universal solution for job loss.

The "We Bought Your Clients, Goodbye to Your (VBG) People" Playbook

Guys, regarding the “so called” JV….its not!

Coming at it from a sales perspective BT have the client footprint, better infrastructure and most significantly, staff costs are significantly lower than Verizon’s

There are very few instances where Verizon has deeper client facing relationships in EMEA….especially in their own backyard (UK).

The Verizon Sales/Sales Managers/Sales Directors in are particularly vulnerable as BT run a tight ship with grading/remuneration. Just do the maths…this is all about efficiency.

Check what BT pay your role online…you will be shocked…they won’t have two pay scales…and everyone at BT isn’t getting a rise!

The support people will be retained in line with the one year commitment to avoid disruption to clients. This also allows sufficient time for Verizon clients, many of which were sold solutions that couldn’t be delivered/supported, to be standardised.

I am sorry to be bearer of bad news but you really should be updating your CV’’s…don’t be fooled…this re-badging ends badly for Verizon.

Show Verizon the same loyalty they have shown you… make the move now….before the decision is taken out of your hands.

Licensing and Union

There is no actual reason that software development cannot be unionized and standardized. You could have real licensing exams to become a software developer. There is no real functional reason that this stack is better than that stack. A single stack could be standardized. Thus you could license this entire field. Licensed jobs provide more job security.

As for unionizing software development. Well the gaming industry is already doing so. If you think what we do here is more complicated than game development. Go make a video game. It’s high time software developers form a union. We are the perfect group for such a thing. We are not understood by our leadership. They do not listen to what we say. They do not allow us to make the system sturdy. Our stakeholders and purse strings holders do not respect us. We run, operate, and build on top of all the systems that run the company. Basically we are not allowed to actually practice our practice. Thus the only option is, we protect our practice through a union. Otherwise we let leadership continue to make cuts to software development headcount, and outsource or not. Then VZ’s systems just collapse. They’re already held together with sp-t and glue. The only way that VZ survives is if software developers are allowed to have a backbone and shape the companies systems. The only way that happens is if software developers collectively bargain against management.

Time and time again VZ has elected to cut doers and keep sayers. If you want this company to win. You have to organize the win. Period. No one is coming to save you.

Looking for RIF-proof role to stay in for next 20 years until retirement

With all the talk about RIFs lately, I'm thinking strategically about my next move here.

I'm not necessarily looking to grow, lead, innovate, take on stretch assignments, contribute, or “make an impact.” At this point, I'd really just like to find a role that is unlikely to be eliminated or increase in responsibilities, and that I can comfortably occupy for the next 20 years until retirement.

Ideally I'm looking for something where:

  • The work is important enough that they can't eliminate the position, but not so important that people can easily identify what I do
  • Answers within the parameters of a maximum of 4 possibilities, no judgment or thinking required
  • Clearly defined responsibilities so I can confidently say “that's outside my scope.”
  • There is little expectation to volunteer for additional work.
-“That's how we've always done it” is considered a perfectly acceptable process improvement strategy.
  • My eventual career goal of “retiring from here” is viewed as a strength rather than a lack of ambition.

For those of you who have successfully moved internally to survive multiple rounds of RIFs: what types of roles should I be looking for?

I'm trying to find my forever home here, not my next career challenge. Ideally, I'd like to get into a role where I can learn a minimum, and then hand everything else off to someone who is still interested in career development.

Any internal career survival experts have advice on which jobs we have internally that suit these goals?
