Return-to-Office Mandates are Triggering a New Era of Workplace Sabotage

https://enhancv.com/blog/rto-stealth-layoffs/

Some highlights:

The average trust score for RTO motives sits at a mediocre 59/100.
[...]
A staggering 72% of surveyed employees suspect their company’s RTO mandate is, in fact, attrition by design—a stealth layoff intended to make work life inconvenient enough that people quit voluntarily, allowing the company to reduce headcount without the PR nightmare or financial burden of severance packages.
[...]
Once employees feel they’re being pushed out or misled, their internal monologue shifts from "How can I contribute?" to "How can I protect myself?" Our survey captured the specific ways this tactical presence manifests. The most visible trend is coffee badging—where nearly half the workforce (46%) admits to showing up just long enough to swipe their badge and be "seen" before leaving to work elsewhere. While leadership often turns to strict badge-tracking to ensure productivity, our data suggests that aggressive monitoring actually backfires. We’ve identified a surveillance paradox: the more a company tracks a worker, the less that worker is bought into the company’s mission.
[...]
27.8% of interviewed employees have successfully negotiated a personal exception to the policy, while the rest are left to comply. This creates a visible two-tier workforce, where those without the leverage to opt out feel uniquely targeted. When you combine this lack of equity with the fact that 72% of surveyed employees suspect these mandates are actually stealth layoffs in disguise, the result is a total collapse of traditional corporate loyalty. If the company is perceived to be using office requirements to trigger resignations, employees no longer feel a moral obligation to give 100% of their energy to a single employer.

Bank layoffs today

Today was the 2nd of 3 rounds of layoffs bank has planned for 2026. The first round back in January was 5%, and today was half that amount at 2.5%, late October will be the final 2.5% to get to the 10% goal set in place by the BOD.
The ones impacted were hired on during 2021-2022 at the beginning of the AML consent order work.

H-1B Extensions at USAA: Facts, Not Rumors

There seems to be a lot of misinformation floating around here, so let me share what I've personally seen instead of repeating rumors.

Every H-1B case at USAA is handled on an individual basis. There is no blanket "H-1B purge." Whether an extension is filed depends on business needs, funding, the project, and whether management can justify retaining the position.

As we all know, USAA has been laying off employees across the company, regardless of whether they are U.S. citizens or H-1B visa holders.

My own extension was filed four months before my visa expired because my manager put together a strong business case, and it was approved. A teammate had his extension filed about a month before expiration. Within my department, I know people whose extensions were filed just one or two weeks before their visas expired. I also know someone in the banking division whose extension was filed only five days before expiration. Those situations are incredibly stressful, but they also prove that there is no single timeline or policy that applies to everyone.

In cases where extensions were not pursued, it wasn't simply because someone was on an H-1B. In several instances, managers couldn't justify keeping the position because of budget constraints or changing business priorities. Some work was shifted offshore, while others were offered the opportunity to continue by converting to a third-party contractor arrangement, which some declined.

Another point that keeps getting ignored: when an H-1B employee leaves, USAA is often not backfilling that position. The work is frequently eliminated, consolidated, moved offshore, or absorbed by existing teams. So if you're celebrating an H-1B employee losing a job because you think it means you'll be hired instead, you may be celebrating a position that no longer exists.

Yes, severance has been paid in applicable cases, and employees whose extensions were not being pursued were generally allowed to continue working during that period. I genuinely appreciate that approach, especially compared to layoffs earlier this year where they escorted employees out of the building the same day they were laid off.

So before people continue posting that "USAA isn't extending H-1Bs anymore," ask yourself whether you're sharing facts or just repeating rumors. My experience—and the experiences of several coworkers I personally know—doesn't support that claim. Don't let anonymous internet posts send you into a panic. Talk to your manager, your coworkers, and people who have actually gone through the process. Someone else's outcome does not automatically become yours.

To those on H-1Bs who are understandably worried: if you have a mortgage, children in school, or other major commitments, the uncertainty is real. We all knew the visa came with risk, but living through that uncertainty is still difficult. Don't let fear be driven by speculation.

Finally, I have to address the people cheering every time an H-1B worker loses a job.

The funniest part is watching some of you claim you're "standing up for American workers" while celebrating when your fellow Americans are laid off, and then turning around to celebrate H-1B workers getting laid off too. At that point, it's obvious this was never about protecting American workers. You seem to enjoy seeing people lose their livelihoods, regardless of who they are.

And if you believe someone else's layoff automatically creates an opportunity for you, you fundamentally misunderstand how workforce reductions work. Companies don't hire people because someone else was shown the door. They hire people because they create enough value to justify bringing them on. If you're spending more time celebrating layoffs than improving your own skills, you may be focusing on the wrong problem.

Tired of waiting games

I’m honestly tired of the waiting game. If you’re going to do layoffs just do it already. They already know who is going to be let go so just do it. The anxiety of waiting and wondering is getting so exhausting. In my area WFH jobs are non existent except for Centene. I have put my resume out there and applied for over 50 jobs already in case I get cut and was declined from most or never received a response. I’ve been with this company for almost four years now and have made it through other layoffs but they didn’t feel as extreme as this one.
I honestly just want answers or some type of update. The job market is awful right now and this is going to hurt a lot of people who live in smaller towns with not many options for employment. I truly hope I make it through these cuts but I’m mentally preparing myself to be let go. I’m still working just as hard every day but the anxiety is causing me to be physically sick. Sorry just needed to vent.

Severance packages available!!! Carlsbad/Hobbs

Well, guys, I was offered a severance package today, and I didn’t take it. HR told me that if I don’t accept it, I’ll most likely be laid off in mid-November during the next round of layoffs. They gave me until the 18th to make a decision, and honestly, I don’t know what to do anymore.

I was able to review the package, and it’s 11 months of pay. I also get to keep my stocks. It’s a tough decision.

Garden Leave or Immediate Termination?

Does anyone know whether, when someone is laid off, they receive a few months of garden leave, or are terminated immediately with a few month severance package instead?

Also, if anyone has gone through this, were you given a choice between garden leave and immediate termination with severance, or was it entirely decided by the company?

Crapital One is at it again!

Although my time was short with Discover/Crapital One, I have come to believe that it was a blessing in disguise! Not living day to day in a toxic environment where management lies and you wait for the hatchet any minute and knowing you are a hardworking, valuable employee, is a blessing. I hope the best for the good folks they "Crapped" on this week. Regarding the severance - take the money and run! They have surely already crafted your job posting for LinkedIn, and possibly interviewed your much younger, less costly, on-site, replacement! Crapital One is just that - One Cr-ppy Company that does not care about any employees...

New Jersey Sees More Layoff Notices, Fewer Workers Affected

New Jersey employers filed 84 mass-layoff notices affecting 9,242 workers in the first seven months of 2026. This represents a 42 percent increase in the number of notices compared to the same period in 2025. However, the total number of affected workers only rose by 7.8 percent. The average layoff filing in 2026 involved approximately 110 workers, a decrease from about 145 workers per filing in 2025. This indicates a trend of more companies announcing cuts, but with smaller individual workforce reductions.

Canceled Townhall and more layoffs

It feel like the European markets has become the last target. Managers, mid level engineers and data scientists are being laid off like leaves falling in autumn. The way it is being handled makes it seem like they want to abandon much of the remaining EU markets. All veterans almost let go.

If feels as if minions were simply told, "keep removing people until you hit the quarter target numbers" , layoff is Nielsen new innovation, regardless of the consequences. The irony is that they seemed sorting employees by compensation in Excel and working their way down. R.I.P

Candy Maker Closure Announced

Pearson's Candy Company will close its St. Paul plant on September 28th. Approximately 80 employees will be laid off due to a lack of financial sustainability. An Oracle Executive is Begging

Shame on you guys. I recently happened to interview a person from Oracle. He was a director in Oracle and was laid off last September. I initially rejected the resume saying big NO for Oracle but had to pick the resume due to strong recommendation.

He claimed to possess tech skills on paper and was able communicate clearly on his projects. Tech gap is ok. The real gap was his financial and strategical thinking. He doesn't seems to have futuristic vision and seems maintained his project in status quo. He doesn't have clear budgeting knowledge. Later figured out he was just running the show with his India team and some engineers which was taken over by his another peer.

Seems lots of managers and directors are hanging around in Oracle like this without basic management skills and a set of people. btw I am an ex-oracle pmts but in senior position now.

Mayor Jacob Frey's upcoming budget proposal will address this shortfall through substantial cuts and possible department consolidations. This marks the most extensive layoff in the city in sixteen years.
