Just like most of you, I was miserable at TD. Doing the workload of two jobs, with a horrible management team. Well I already landed a new job (much better company) with a 20% pay increase. TD severance still running through May. This is a message to everyone still there - you HAVE to start interviewing! The ship is sinking rapidly, but if you put your mind to it, you can land another job pretty quickly. The job market is bad, but not THAT bad. Get out while you still can! Your life will improve!

No matter if AI is just an excuse for cost reduction or not, if you're safe today, don't get comfortable, prepare your Plan B or Plan C. We as a tech company, as long as your job is working on your laptop, you are in danger of getting replaced by AI or cheaper labor.

Maybe you will think, okay, I'm an SME and I have unique domain knowledge, and I'm the 'valued retained team members". No, the messages you sent on Teams, the documents you saved on SharePoint and laptop, any work you do, are all training material for AI within this company (within any company having AI)

Onwards and upwards

That's how bad it's become. I've been trying to find something else for months. Read the other day that it's something like 250 people fighting for every open role. The inability to change your situation no matter how hard you try is debilitating. I get overwhelmed by anxiety just thinking about losing this job.

Honestly, lately I’ve just been really passionate about whatever my manager is passionate about. Turns out I have a lot of really strong opinions about their ideas and weirdly, all of them are great ideas. I’ve also been stepping up for the bigger projects, because nothing says “please don’t fire me” like being the first to volunteer for more work. I’ve just found that the more coffee chats I schedule with leadership, the more they seem to… remember I exist. Funny how that works. I’m not saying I laughed at every joke in the last team meeting, but I’m also not saying I didn’t.

For at least a couple of years, until everything settles down. There's no doubt about this in my mind. If you like job security, you're out of luck.

It's my first job and I'd hate to lose it before I even properly started.

Funny how a role that was "eliminated" shows up online a few months later with the exact same description. They can call it restructuring all they want. We all know what it really was.
