Verizon Reports Q2 Earnings Next Week as Analysts Dial Up Concerns Over SpaceX Threat

Communications giant Verizon $VZ reports its Q2 earnings next week – July 24 – with Wall Street analysts becoming increasingly worried about the impact of competition from Elon Musk’s newly listed SpaceX $SPCX.

VZ’s share price is up 10.4% in the year-to-date, helped by its cost-cutting program to boost efficiencies and M&A such as its $20 billion purchase of fiber-optic internet provider Frontier Communications.

Wall Street expects Verizon to report earnings per share of $1.28 in Q2, up from the $1.22 it reported in the same period last year. Revenues are tipped to come in at $35.23 billion, up from $34.44 billion last time.

What Do Analysts Say?

Scotiabank Four-star TipRanks-rated analyst Maher Yaghi recently lowered his price target to $51.50 from $54.50 but kept an Outperform rating on the stock. It came as part of a report into the telecommunication services sector. Yaghi said he was adjusting some multiples on these stocks down to “investor trepidation to increased satellite competition”. However, he said he continues to favor Verizon in the sector.

The competition is likely to refer to the continued expansion of Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite services. Its growth is set to be rocket-fueled by the recent IPO of parent company SpaceX $SPCX.

Indeed, Bernstein analyst Laurent Yoon gave a similar reasoning after lowering his price target on VZ to $44 from $49, keeping a Market Perform rating on the shares.

“While SpaceX’s Starlink is unlikely to have a substantial near-term impact for telecom companies, it represents another competitor in an already mature and highly penetrated broadband market,” he said. Yoon believes the presence of Starlink implies subscriber gains for one provider will increasingly come at the expense of another, making market share shifts more consequential. “Uncertainty surrounding Starlink is unlikely to be resolved anytime soon,” he said.

There has been much industry commentary about whether Starlink would be forming an MVNO – Mobile Virtual Network Operator – partnership with a major telecoms company or operate as an independent mobile carrier. Indeed, SpaceX is reportedly now considering launching a Starlink retail product and could build its own terrestrial U.S. mobile network.

Five-star TipRanks-rated Wells Fargo analyst Steven Cahall believes Verizon has “the most to lose and the most to gain from an MVNO with Starlink,” applying a 40% probability to such a deal. He noted that a VZ-Starlink Mobile MVNO “would be mid-to-high single digit percentage accretive to EBITDA/EPS by 2032.”

He recently initiated Verizon at Equal Weight with a $43 price target and named it Wells Fargo’s most preferred telco.

You do realize layoffs never stop, right?

It's the major rounds that happen occasionally and everybody gets all panicked about. But there are constant cuts, happening all the time, with just a few people here and there. You aren't noticing because you're not paying attention to anything smaller scale. Don't assume you're safe just because there won't be any major rounds before September or whenever.

AEG another den of scammers?

Given the headcount of AEG, we are heavily investing in AI. Our strength in AI chip design lies in the vast internal data within our tools, which can be directly leveraged by AI models, a luxury that customers and other AI chip companies simply do not have. That said, it is striking that neither my team nor neighboring teams appear to be working directly with AEG to integrate this AI into our tool workflows. It seems to me that AEG is another den of scammers. Meanwhile, we are laying off many contributing employees while expanding a group that lacks profitability, clear direction, and a viable strategy.

  • I dont like Mondays

Enjoy tomorrow and keep us updated on the (be)head(ed) count!

We've lost too much knowledge

We can't have more layoffs. We've already let too many experienced people go and replaced them with new grads. The impact is obvious to anyone with eyes and it's only getting worse. More layoffs can truly harm the company and the bottom line in the long run.

Merck downsizing two Israeli development centers

Germany’s Merck Group plans to impose cuts at two Israeli development centers with dozens of layoffs. The centers where there will be cuts are the Jerusalem Electronics Center based on the acquisition of Qlight Nanotech in 2015, and the R&D activity at the Life Sciences Center (Research and Laboratory Technologies) in Rehovot, based on the Sigma-Aldrich acquisition in 2014.

I feel worse for the people who still work here than the ones who just got let go

It's awful seeing coworkers lose their jobs, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. At the same time, this place has had serious issues for years that leadership never bothered to fix. Looking back, almost everyone who's left has ended up happier somewhere else. I'm starting to think the people who walked out last week may have gotten the better deal.

Restructuring madness

We have reorgs constantly, with new structures, new reporting lines, new everything and always many, many layoffs. You'd think with all that effort and all those changes, we'd be perfect by now. But nothing ever truly changes. Why isn't anyone holding leadership accountable?

Last Week LayOffs: only USA or VZI as well?

Last week's layoffs carried over US employees itself or VZ India as well? Why all american workers and their positions get eliminated but not India employees? Is it because of cheap rates? Though their work is at sub-par in quality and no accountability what so ever?

Layoffs and Oversight Teams

When a company’s performance deteriorates year after year, every oversight function should be forced to answer a basic question: did its leaders challenge executives, or did they become too comfortable maintaining access and relationships?

A function that appears more focused on executive schmoozing, polished presentations, and avoiding difficult conclusions than on confronting persistent underperformance is not providing meaningful oversight. It is providing institutional cover.

Accountability should begin with the head of the function and extend directly to their leadership team. If they repeatedly failed to identify, escalate, or communicate the seriousness of the company’s decline, leadership changes and a fundamental restructuring are warranted. At some point, shareholders should stop funding oversight teams that seem unwilling to challenge the people they are supposed to hold accountable.
