Return-to-Office Mandates are Triggering a New Era of Workplace Sabotage

https://enhancv.com/blog/rto-stealth-layoffs/

Some highlights:

The average trust score for RTO motives sits at a mediocre 59/100.
[...]
A staggering 72% of surveyed employees suspect their company’s RTO mandate is, in fact, attrition by design—a stealth layoff intended to make work life inconvenient enough that people quit voluntarily, allowing the company to reduce headcount without the PR nightmare or financial burden of severance packages.
[...]
Once employees feel they’re being pushed out or misled, their internal monologue shifts from "How can I contribute?" to "How can I protect myself?" Our survey captured the specific ways this tactical presence manifests. The most visible trend is coffee badging—where nearly half the workforce (46%) admits to showing up just long enough to swipe their badge and be "seen" before leaving to work elsewhere. While leadership often turns to strict badge-tracking to ensure productivity, our data suggests that aggressive monitoring actually backfires. We’ve identified a surveillance paradox: the more a company tracks a worker, the less that worker is bought into the company’s mission.
[...]
27.8% of interviewed employees have successfully negotiated a personal exception to the policy, while the rest are left to comply. This creates a visible two-tier workforce, where those without the leverage to opt out feel uniquely targeted. When you combine this lack of equity with the fact that 72% of surveyed employees suspect these mandates are actually stealth layoffs in disguise, the result is a total collapse of traditional corporate loyalty. If the company is perceived to be using office requirements to trigger resignations, employees no longer feel a moral obligation to give 100% of their energy to a single employer.

Does taking a new role restart the clock?

I noticed Centene has been posting a large amount of jobs within the past couple of weeks. I’m someone who didn’t take the VSP and doesn’t look like lay-offs are happening in my department. If I apply and get accepted into one of the new jobs will I still keep the years of service I have been here 6+ or will they reset it to whenever the start date of the new role is? I want to make sure I’m covered in case they end up laying off the new roles in 2027/2028.

A Simple Request

"The purpose of this site is to provide a space for anyone who'd like to discuss the possibility, likelihood or impacts of layoffs in a company of interest." - TheLayoff.com

It is not supposed to be a revenge site where people go to post rumors, speculation, lies, or even truths about other things. It isn't a suggestion box or anonymous tip line. So I am respectfully asking those of you who have forgotten the reason why this website exists to please stop hijacking it to promote other agendas. The noise is drowning out the information this site is supposed to provide. Thanks.

Wisconsin Firms Announce July Workforce Reductions

Six Wisconsin companies issued layoff notices in July, impacting a total of 353 workers. These layoffs occurred despite a slight decrease in the state's unemployment rate to 3.3% for the month. The labor force participation rate also saw a minor increase, reaching 64.5%. Several companies cited facility closures or financial unsustainability as the primary reasons for these workforce reductions. The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development provided preliminary numbers for these events.

Radio Station Staff Eliminated for Music Format

A Southern California classic rock station has transitioned to an all-music format. This change resulted in the layoff of the entire on-air staff. The station will now operate without human hosts. Management stated the new format will offer fewer interruptions and more music. This marks a significant shift for the long-running local radio outlet.

SolanaFloor Staff Cuts Precede Token Vesting

SolanaFloor has recently reduced its workforce just before scheduled token allocations were set to vest. The company cited rapid growth as the reason for operational inefficiencies. This timing has raised concerns among observers regarding financial management and company strategy. At least one former employee may now miss out on substantial token value. The layoffs could signal underlying financial challenges within the organization.

Alfonso asking switches for "Daily responsibilities"

Alfonso is now asking multiple switches he's overseeing to send in "Daily tasks/responsibilities"
This screams "what can we get contractors to do"
This is also why the switches in the Northeast still have not received their contracts for the Union. Moving into VZB is not guaranteed for all employees anymore
Good luck in the next layoff

Know your rights if WFRed

If you're 40+ and were just laid off in Massachusetts, three things worth knowing:

1. Your unused vacation is wages. Massachusetts law treats accrued, unused vacation as wages. It must be paid out — "use it or lose it" forfeiture isn't enforceable here. If you were involuntarily terminated, it was due on your last day. Wage Act violations carry mandatory triple damages plus attorney's fees. (Earned sick time is different and generally isn't paid out.)

2. A severance release has minimum legal terms. If you're being asked to waive age discrimination claims, federal law (the OWBPA) requires: at least 21 days to consider it — 45 if it's a group layoff — a 7-day revocation window after signing that can't be waived, written advice to consult an attorney, and something of value beyond what you were already owed.

3. In a group layoff, they owe you data. When a release is offered to a group as part of a termination program, the employer must disclose in writing the decisional unit and selection criteria, plus the job titles and ages of everyone selected and the ages of everyone in that unit who wasn't. Not names — titles and ages. If that attachment is missing, the age-claim waiver may be invalid entirely.

The clock: 300 days to file with the MCAD or EEOC. It runs from the termination, not from whenever severance negotiations wrap up. Don't let a long back-and-forth eat your deadline.

General information, not legal advice — I'm not an attorney. If you're holding a severance agreement, have an employment lawyer look at it before you sign.

Stuck in-between

I'm stuck in this weird space where I can't bring myself to quit, but I secretly hope they lay me off. It would feel like being released from prison, finally free. I love the actual work, but the environment makes it unbearable. Half of me is terrified of getting cut. The other half is waiting for it.

WARN Notice Question

Now that the VSP program has finalized we know the company will be moving forward with involuntary layoffs. Does Centene still have to submit a WARN notice? I did some research and the VSP does not fall under a WARN notice so if Centene decides to lay off more people they have to submit one. My question is, is the WARN notice only for a significant cut in workforce or even if they have a small number of layoffs to do.
I didn’t take the VSP and I’m ok with that but I’m honestly annoyed with not knowing if I’m going to have a job in 60 days or not. The games are getting old.

Educators Face Uncertainty Post-EPISD Job Cuts

Two hundred and five former El Paso Independent School District employees are grappling with their futures following recent job reductions. Many of these individuals are educators and support staff who are now seeking new opportunities. The district has provided data indicating some former employees have returned to EPISD in different roles. This transition period presents significant challenges for those affected by the layoffs. The start of the new school year brings uncertainty for these individuals.

Who funds the Layoff.com?

Why are so many western companies being criticised by people trying to drag down morale? The ones posting hate at Dell: are they ex employees? Or paid to post and destabilise?
I don’t trust this forum anymore. There are real and genuine worries working for Dell and genuine layoff fears are now drowned out by people posting cr-p 3 times a day or more. Fear, lies and deceit. Beware of what you read here.

Laid off from Broadcom software? What was your notice and severance?

What was your severance and notice in the latest layoffs in California? I'm wondering if they keep on the payroll through the WARN period, with healthcare, then give you a lump sum severance after the WARN period expires?

Did you get an email, a phone call, or a zoom meet notification?

Did you get any time to clean out your laptop?

With rumors of big layoffs soon, the tagline has to be:

BE PREPARED!

What was your experience?

BP Streamlines Operations with Job Cuts

BP is planning to eliminate approximately 700 non-frontline positions as part of a strategic restructuring. This move aims to simplify operations, reduce costs, and enhance profitability. The majority of these affected roles are office-based or support functions, not those directly involved in production. This workforce reduction aligns with BP's renewed focus on its core oil and gas business. The company is prioritizing efficiency and financial performance in its ongoing turnaround strategy.

Separation date for 2027

For those who got a separation date past September are you actually planning on sticking it out? I’m so torn since my separation is for May 2027. I had planned on hopefully getting the VSP with a separation in September. Now to be stuck in limbo until May with trying to meet performance and having it held over my head that I can be let go without a package at any time. I honestly regret accepting the VSP and wish I would’ve taken my chances at being laid off.

Schnucks to Close Warehouse, Eliminate Union Jobs

Schnucks will close its last company-owned warehouse in Bridgeton, Missouri, next year. This closure will result in the layoff of nearly 60 Teamsters Local 688 members. The company is transitioning away from operating its own warehouses. Schnucks has provided eight months' notice to affected employees. The union plans to begin effects bargaining in early August.
