Never been part of a dreary and dismal company like Dell

The stock is soaring. You’d expect the attitude to be high energy and people to be in full support of the company. You’d expect to see new products going to market, more hiring, more bonuses, more investment in people. You’d want free thinking people who are inventing and thinking outside the box.

It’s the exact opposite. It’s dreary, dismal and there is an overall black cloud across the company. Every email seems like it could be your last. Services are taken away from you, like coffee cups (really??), promotions to the “liked” and layoffs are happening left and right. The totally incompetent are getting promoted because they’re “yes men” and people are totally unmotivated. There is no more technical leadership, there is just no leadership. Just politicians who use buzzwords and jockey for positional power.

It’s pathetic and sad to see such an opportunity to take advantage of the hype Dell is getting and motivate your people. Reward them and support them. Greed is clearly an enemy of the people and greed is rampant at Dell. Every SVP and above have proven they are soulless ghouls who would do anything for a dollar. They seem to be missing the big picture. That they’re titled and who they are doesn’t matter to anyone. Nobody cares. In fact, they’re making more enemies than friends.

It’s a sad, pathetic time at Dell and is the worst I have ever seen it. Something needs to change or this company will crash and burn. As far as layoffs go, expect them every single month until these greedy, fat ba----ds get their fill.

Bloodbath in India today

I posted below a post a few days ago that I received an invite from my skip and HR for today. Turns out it was entirely for a layoff. Today, there was a big wave that hit me and several others at the Bangalore office. Not sure if other countries are impacted so far. Anyway, stay strong and good luck everyone, wherever you are.

Bell Labs head explicitly announced there will have 40% cut

Bell labs head (G.P.) announced that there will have 40% reduction in the whole Bell Labs, and only 6 research centres will be kept. He said these numbers are accidentally sent out to all Bell Labs researcher in a ppt, and he refused to make any explanation on these numbers. Once people asking about the discontinued Network Systems Research lab, no comments and no responsibilities but still blablabla on AI-based research. One of the most chaotic All hands in Bell Labs.

The head of Bell Labs (G.P.) announced that the lab would lay off 40% of its staff, retaining only six research centers. He claimed these figures were mistakenly sent to all Bell Labs researchers in a PowerPoint presentation and refused to offer any explanation. When asked about the disbanded Network Systems Research Lab, he neither responded directly nor took any responsibility, yet continued to discuss how AI could be used research blablabla.
This was the most chaotic all hands meeting in Bell Labs' history.

Sadly but Marcus Weldon is correct on what the new TAO is doing:

ESPN Cuts Staff Amid NFL Network Acquisition

ESPN has reportedly laid off numerous employees, primarily impacting its football coverage. Among those let go is injury analyst Stephania Bell, who had been with the network for nearly two decades. The cuts also affected former NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero and NFL analyst Ryan Clark. This wave of dismissals follows ESPN's recent acquisition of NFL Network. In contrast, college football analyst Tim Tebow has received a contract extension.

How far has Dell fallen when even "The Zuck" seems like a good guy? :D

"To make its workforce “AI native,” Meta explored slashing the size of many teams across the company by as much as 60% in two waves, internal documents show. Staff revolted - and hours before a big layoff in May, the CEO called off planning for further cuts."

MD on the other hand, obviously doesn't care. Yay! (:D)

TikTok Nashville Office Closure Details

TikTok is shutting down its Nashville office in early October, impacting approximately 250 employees. The company will keep these workers on payroll for two months before the closure. Following this period, affected staff will receive one month of severance pay, plus an additional month for each year of employment. This severance package is comparable to offers made by other tech and media companies during recent layoff events. The announcement was made via email and a video call where questions were not permitted.

PayPal Has Lost Its Way

We do not need a stay of execution; we need certainty and security.
Leadership has lost its humanity in what was once a great company, where people genuinely came first. PayPal is no longer a company I’m proud to work for.

I would welcome the opportunity, if given the appropriate platform, to publicly and constructively critique the decisions and leadership approach that have brought us to this point. People deserve transparency, accountability, and to be treated with dignity—not uncertainty and fear.

Mandatory RTO Myths

The traditional five-day office week was sold to us for decades as some kind of sacred law of business. Executives insisted that without people physically sitting in a cubicle, collaboration would fall apart, productivity would tank, and "culture" (whatever that means) would just evaporate.

Then 2020 happened. In a matter of weeks, half the working world moved to their kitchen tables, and it turned out the whole thing was less about performance and more about control.

Here's how the forced remote work experiment kind of blew up the core myths of office culture.

1. The Productivity Mirage

The big scary warning was always: unsupervised employees will slack off. Turns out that was backwards. Multiple studies during the pandemic showed productivity held steady or even went up when people worked from home. No more open-floor-plan noise, no more soul-crushing commutes — people actually got hours of real, focused work done. Turns out showing up isn't the same thing as producing anything. Output matters, not butt-in-seat time.

2. The Collaboration Cult

Leadership loves to say innovation needs "watercooler moments" and everyone breathing the same recycled office air. And sure, in-person brainstorming has its place. But the pandemic proved you don't need five days a week of shared oxygen to collaborate well. Teams got good at async work fast — people had time to actually think before responding instead of just performing enthusiasm in a meeting room. Real connection comes from intentional communication, not a shared zip code.

3. The Real Estate Sunk-Cost Problem

When companies push hard for a full return-to-office despite everyone hating it, the stated reasons rarely add up. A lot of these orgs are locked into 10-15 year commercial leases, and an empty building is just a giant unrecoverable cost sitting on the balance sheet. So forcing people back to their desks is often less about "performance" and more about justifying an expensive real estate bet nobody wants to admit was a mistake.

4. The Illusion of Culture

"Culture" got used as a guilt trip to drag people back to their desks — like camaraderie only exists within four walls. But most people figured out pretty quick that real culture isn't free snacks and a ping pong table. It's psychological safety, respect for your time outside of work, fair pay, and people actually communicating clearly. Once the office perks got stripped away, you could see they were just distractions from bad work-life boundaries the whole time.

The Bottom Line: Outcomes Over Attendance

The whole remote work experiment showed that the five-day office mandate was more of a leftover habit than an actual business requirement. Hybrid setups are a fine middle ground for teams that need occasional in-person time, but the idea that full-time office attendance is non-negotiable just doesn't hold up anymore.

Work isn't a place anymore — it's a thing you do. Companies that don't get that are gonna keep losing their best people to competitors who actually care about results instead of just watching who's in their seat at 9am.

Leave of Absence Game

I’m starting to see a lot of folks taking a leave of absence. It’s all woman and some in high positions. What’s going on?

I can believe some want more family time but wouldn’t surprise me if they are trying to avoid an assessment cycle while still keeping their insurance and RSUs. I know 4 woman in finance leaving or have left before October 1 cutoff for assessments.

Other Health Insurance Corporations that Have Already Ended Went Through What We Are From 10 Years Ago

I was trying to click on Elevance Health because they, along with other of Centene’s competitors, seem to be going through almost exactly same challenges Centene is.

Well, I accidentally clicked on Emblem Health, instead of Elevance, and their last post thread entries were from 2016 and they were saying and complaining about the very exact same thing as us…about the offshoring to India and Philippines, about the CEO laying people off to raise stock price and to line executive’s pockets, etc., etc. etc. It was like looking in a mirror and we are talking back 10 years ago.

The last post entries on the Emblem Health Layoff site ended after 2016 so I can only think the company went under.

Anyway, scary stuff!

More layoffs coming Monday

More layoffs are set to roll out in America on Monday. I'm numb. 2.48 billion dollar revenue but they still decide to layoff the people making it happen. This is beyond parody. SHAPE survey comes out and says people are unhappy and Synopsys leadership decides to keep beating the dead horse. Unbelievable

Homelessness Authority Cuts Staff Amid Financial Review

The King County Regional Homelessness Authority has implemented its first round of layoffs, impacting ten employees. These cuts follow a period of uncertainty for staff after leadership announced potential job losses. The agency's top executives were notably absent during the layoff announcements, attending a council meeting instead. These layoffs occur as an audit reveals significant unreconciled funds within the organization. Severance packages for the affected employees are notably less generous than those provided in previous layoffs.

30 days notice?

Has anyone VP or above refused to give the ridiculous 30 days notice and leave in 2 or “effective immediately.” I’m strongly considering giving 2 middle fingers to these id--ts and just turning my equipment in. Curious as to what the firm can actually do to retaliate other than maybe put on the do not rehire list.

ICA San Diego Board Reviews Staff Concerns

The Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego's board is investigating allegations of financial mismanagement following significant staff layoffs. Current and former employees submitted a letter of no confidence, requesting the executive director's dismissal and a formal audit. The board has acknowledged receiving these concerns and is conducting a thorough review. Documentation suggests financial and operational issues have impacted the institution's ability to meet payroll and fulfill its mission. The museum confirmed nearly half of its staff was eliminated on August 17th.

I wonder how HR feels about all this

A few months ago I was talking to a recruiter about coming back to Fidelity after I got laid off. When I spoke to them, they said something like "it's a huge relief I don't have to explain that whole connect week thing to you compared to other people I call". They also said "yeah... it's gonna be an experiment".

From the outside looking in, you can tell a lot of these people in HR have opinions on what's going on that they don't want to be outward about. Anti bootlicking opinions. Or at least that's what I see. They hate the new laws of the land, they're just the ones that have to enforce them.

So, if you're in HR, if you feel comfortable sharing, what do you think about all this?

Hospital Cuts Impact Patient Care Staff

St. Joseph's Medical Center has eliminated several clerical positions, citing economic pressures and rising costs. This decision has led to concerns among nurses and staff about increased workloads and potential patient safety risks. Some employees received layoff notices, forcing them to seek new roles within the hospital or face financial strain. Hospital management stated these changes are proactive measures for long-term sustainability and efficiency. The union representing affected workers believes these cuts will negatively impact patient care delivery.

A Little Positivity?

Is all the bashing of Schwab and its senior leaders here really warranted? There's a reason why Schwab is consistently ranked a top employer in nearly every city where it has a campus. Because it's a really great place to work. The pay is well above average, the benefits are 1st class and the company does really care about its employees.

Now I don't kid myself. I know at some point that Schwab will need to make a decision in its interest that won't be in mine. I come to this site to get an idea of when that may happen so I can plan accordingly. Instead I just end up reading a bunch of nasty comments about how terrible the company is. Last summer we cancelled our lawn care service for financial reasons and now my husband cuts the grass. I would sure hate to think the crew that came out to my house each week was now online badmouthing me like a lot of you are doing to Schwab.

I love Schwab but I'm a realist. At some point they will probably lay me off. But til then, I am committed to giving them my best and so should the rest of you.

And so it begins

Just had a call with my new "leader" at Charter and was told in no uncertain terms "Move to Stamford of you are effectively resigning from the company." Nice right? Alex Taylor cared about one thing and one thing only - building his legacy within the family, regardless of the human capital losses.
