Chevron cheers fourfold profits boost

"Surging oil and gas prices drive Chevron to $12 billion in adjusted earnings, quadrupling last year's results."

Come on Chevron, invest in employees...they are doing more for less and still making pre-covid wages! What is the incentive for employees to do more for the company? Keeping the workforce held down...

Jobless Claims Tick Up Slightly

Americans filing for unemployment benefits saw a modest increase last week, though overall layoff numbers remain historically low. The Labor Department reported a rise of 9,000 new claims, bringing the total to 197,000 for the week ending July 25. This figure, while higher than the previous week, is still near a fifty-year low. The data suggests a stable labor market despite minor fluctuations. The number of continuing claims also saw a slight increase.

What does strategy team do?

What does the strategy team actually do?

They spend their time building polished, fancy decks, but there’s often no execution plan because execution isn’t part of their mandate.

I also want to build a rocket. But do I have the budget, resources, talent, or infrastructure? No. Anyone can propose ambitious ideas if they’re not accountable for delivering them.

So how do we justify the existence of these teams?

In the November layoffs, VCG eliminated entire strategy teams. Yet in the new organization, they’ve rebuilt another army of people doing…strategy.

Educational Reimbursement

Not sure what the correctly terminology is, but for those that are having the company Reimburse them for education expenses, how will it work if those employees are laid off. Is there a requirement that the employee must work for the company a certain number of years?

Chicago School Board Rejects Layoffs, Bets on State Funds

The Chicago Board of Education voted to reject a proposed budget that would have resulted in over 1,000 layoffs. Instead, the board approved a revised plan contingent on $150 million in uncommitted state funding. Board members supporting the amendment argued that mass layoffs would harm students and that the district's warnings were exaggerated. This decision was made despite warnings from district officials that it could lead to an unbalanced budget and financial instability. The vote passed 11-7, with supporters aligning with the Chicago Teachers Union.

It’s not a rumor. Wells Fargo is using “termination for cause” strategies to avoid paying severance.

They are using reviews to set us up for termination with no severance. It’s happening to well-respected employees who have propped this company up for years through all their corporate governance issues, consumer abuses and scandals. (I like to believe there are still some good managers here, but they are reporting to people who have made it to the top at Wells Fargo. People don’t make it to the top at Wells Fargo without being ruthless and narcissistic.)

Don’t assume your review is a meaningless routine HR checking of boxes.

  • If you disagree with something written in your review, politely and factually correct false claims in writing. Ask for specific examples of where you failed, and submit your written rebuttal to add to your personnel file.
  • Do not lightly sign a review you disagree with, or a disciplinary write-up on the spot. Add a brief note next to your signature stating that you receipt-only sign and disagree with the assessment.
  • Maintain a file on a personal device of past positive reviews, emails, chat logs, and project data (however you can do so within company policy) to prove your performance. Assume you may need it.

Like Watching Paint Dry

Wow that PPD townhall was my first time watching Harmeet speak. My god, talk about monotonous, boring and uninspiring.

Seriously when people ask questions like how will people who lost their skip level or direct managers be fairly assessed on their work this year, the response shouldn't be a plain "yes they will be assessed for their work throughout the year". Duh, people are seeking clarity on the HOW, for goodness sake. Talk about how you already drew up the relationship graph of people remaining in the org, how you guys took stock of how the entire ecosystem of projects fit together, how teams are going to be assigned under new leaders who are genuinely excited at what they have to provide.

What's the point of these townhalls if you're going to be as vague and sombre as possible? When people ask questions about motivation, you don't just tell them to sit with their feelings for this week and look forward to the future. Tell us what exactly we should look forward to, and if layoffs are done for the foreseeable future, then use that to motivate remaining workers. Give people a carrot or something! When people asked if alternatives were considered, talk about how existing employee benefits cuts were considered, whether costs regarding AI models (why are there 80 available models btw) could be cut, whether this was made accounting for that crazy phase of token maxxing, will leaders personally taken salary cuts / pay increases this year during such a "sad and difficult time" as they claim.

Do these people even know how to motivate or show empathy at all? Have they been in genuine leadership positions outside of the corporate world where you actually have to inspire to get people to follow? In the military you have servant leadership (personal sacrifice) at the core, on sports teams captains are expected to display leadership by example, these people have no idea what any of these concepts mean!

They're genuinely soulless puppets, you can see it in their eyes, Harmeet, Rajat and whoever that HR minion brought up to speak during the townhall was. Actively applying for other roles right now, whatever culture Al Kelly instilled is completely gone.

I wish people would stop saying they wish they were laid off

I nearly blew up at a coworker yesterday over this. If you want to leave so badly, then quit. Don't tell me and other people you wish you were laid off after we've watched so many excellent workers lose their jobs and seen how devastated they were over it this week. Read the room, people.

What’s US Severance?

Mentally preparing for Monday layoffs in aiops - how does severance work? Do you stay on the payroll for a certain amount of time or get the package worth up front? What happens if you find another job during your severance time (ex new job 2 months into a 3 month severance) - do you forfeit the last month?

Bonus cut!!!

My manager finally allowed me to talk to HR about a salary increase seeing as I had taken on a lot more responsibility and staff under me.
HR has told me I can have a 7% salary bump but my bonus will be cut by 5%
I’ve not had an increase in 2 years but I’m in two minds. The monthly increase is ok, not good but the bonus cut is terrible. But the way the company was a going will we even get another bonus with the debt they are going to have to pay off.

It pretty much feels they are telling me they either accept it or stay on where I am. FYI I’m not on contract

Has anyone else been thru this process lately?
I’m confused.
